Since your number is zero, you have no tasks. Thus, there is nothing for you to see when your mouse cursor hovers over the indicator. Once you have a pending task, the drop-down task menu will appear.
I'm still not sure...you know us "old dogs" are difficult to teach new tricks to. I get something I like and it takesme a while to appreciate a change...LOL

Tasks are actions that you need to take...like responding to group invites or approving pending group content.
Hover your mouse cursor over that item to see each task you have pending.
