Deception, Unveiling the Wombats CCCIXXX

November 02, 2009 07:43 PM EST
views: 90 | rating: 10/10 (1 vote) | comments: 360

Intentional or not?

During the Wombats 3rd Annual Terrifying Tales contest participating guessers were unable to attribute the author to the tale. So is it mimicry? Or does one's voice change that dramatically when switching genres? Is our success hinged on accepting the correct genre for our voice?

Part of Phantasmagoria is where illusion and reality inhabit the same space, so did you accept the contest and write in your voice or did you adopt a "character" or costume for the task? It's fun to play dress up.

17 entries in the contest.

3 people had multiple entries.

The best guesser got 7/17 correct.

We know each other, and I have to admit to being a little surprised how wrong we were. What's up?

Random bacchanalia, sort of like the Wombats.

I never do a good job of identifying authors. There are a few who have a very distinctive voice, but I can't pick out the voices of most Wombats.

So, to torture myself, I thought I'd check the amazon #s for WBU.

Judi, I didn't find WBU the last time I was at the bookstore, but I haven't been since last week. I need to get in there so I can touch it.
Judi F. Nov 2, 2009, 8:01pm EST
It's not supposed to release until tomorrow, so that's actually a good thing you didn't find it. You know, for when I could possibly make the lists and all... LOL
Jamie C. Nov 2, 2009, 8:05pm EST
Next time I'm in civilization (Nov 12th) I hope to find it at a bookstore. Of course if I don't find it, then it's sold out locally which would make Judi happy, but me sad.

And no, I never consciously disguise my voice. I think a lot of people probably guessed which one I wrote. We'll see though.
Beth H. Nov 2, 2009, 8:01pm EST
I guessed you wrote Scaredy Cat.
Judi F. Nov 2, 2009, 8:02pm EST
I thought she wrote that one, too.
Jamie C. Nov 2, 2009, 8:03pm EST
You guessed wrong.
Beth H. Nov 2, 2009, 8:03pm EST
Rats.
Judi F. Nov 2, 2009, 8:04pm EST
wow. Seriously?

Okay, I officially stink at guessing.
Pat S. Nov 2, 2009, 8:05pm EST
I had Beaker for Scaredy Cat and Jamie for Dead Ringer.
Jamie C. Nov 2, 2009, 8:06pm EST
I have Wanda for Scaredy Cat.

No comment, Pat.
Pat S. Nov 2, 2009, 8:09pm EST

Listening to "Closer to home" by Grand Funk. A song about insanity, which I think is perfectly attuned to the evening's fun.

I tried to pick out aspects that clearly mark my work...and got rid of them to try to fool people. I'd be very surprised if that worked. Voice! Of all my problems, having a distinct voice ain't one of them, but maybe I'm wrong.
Beth H. Nov 2, 2009, 8:06pm EST
You do have voice, Ken. I just never seem to hear it with your contest entries and short blurbs.
Pat S. Nov 2, 2009, 8:07pm EST
I didn't try to fool any body. I had 10 million things going on and just jammed a story out there.
Pat S. Nov 2, 2009, 8:18pm EST

I'd like to know who most people got RIGHT? Who has such a distinct voice it can't be disguised? And was there anyone that NO ONE got right? And where's the list of winners?
Judi F. Nov 2, 2009, 8:05pm EST
I bet I can answer that one, Pat. I think we all got Paul's - at least one of them, but I had him down for 4. Paul has a very distinct voice and style.
Judi F. Nov 2, 2009, 8:07pm EST
btw, did you happen to look at the picture on the last thread? I thought for sure you'd be in rapture over where it was taken. Which leads me to believe you didn't look closely enough.
