Travel-The Sugar Glider, "ultimate pocket pet"

Last weekend I saw these little guys while I wandered the exhibition halls before opening of the National Peanut Festival outside Dothan Alabama.

I'd arranged to get in a bit early to see things before the crowds showed and I came upon a gentleman who preferred NOT to have his photo taken but told me quite about about the "Sugar Glider" animals. Click on the link and read for yourself.

The cutest little things, these pets are quite pricey, at least in Dothan... $425.00 with cage and six months supply of food. As his sign said he only sells the very young ones that will still bond with humans.

I took a few photos of the critters, not really what I was there to do, but the best part was as I leaned over the cage to get a shot of the litter of 'joeys'... THIS little guy went unnoticed and squalled at me as my beard touched him up in the corner of the cage. We BOTH jumped!

Wonderful critters and they can almost fly!

I always wanted to get one of these, but then I heard that you actually had to clean their cage everyday? Still they are very cool, and I've always been into possums of all kinds. Guess they're overrunning New Zealand? Seems like there was even an alternative rock song about them once. It would definitely be cool to have one, although they are pricey as you say. There are certainly a lot of unique possums (and related creatures) in the world -- thanks for sharing this!

Interesting. I remember when coati mundis were being sold as pets. They're an arborial member of the raccoon family with prehensile tails. I imagine there's nothing in the house that they couldn't get into unless kept caged constantly, which would certainly be unfair to an animal that size.

yup.. it is a HUGE fairground dedicated primarily to the purpose!

they are beautiful in the wild~ they glide on the breeze~ effortless and fluid~ behind a cage they loose the naturl qulity and become cute little snuggle toys~ however a friend of mine had one for a month many years ago~ they are cute but not cuddly~ they BITE~ hard~ he's missing the top of his index finger~

Did you know that the people that sell them in places like that are more or less like a puppy mill sort of thing. If you really want one find someone that is honest and knows what they are doing.
I had to wonder... he kept saying that they only sold them while they were very young, he had a LOT of them, and...

They are absolutely adorable! Here they run about $250 the rare times there's one in the pet shop. That's just for the sugar glider, no cage, no food nothing.
