We headed out a bit early tonight, and tried trick or treating around our house. Last year was our first year in town, and we drove across town to a different area. It was packed, so I figured we'd try staying around home instead. Well, apparently, everyone goes across town, because we only hit about 7 houses out of probably 25. We then opted to drive across town.
I was shocked and amazed at how many slutty costumes there were this year, on young girls. I'm used to it from high school girls and college age girls. But, I saw girls tonight who were Rae's age, some even younger, who were wearing costumes that were better suited to the bedroom, than out in public.
One family we saw had the mom & 2 daughters trick or treating together. The older daughter looked younger than Rae, and wasn't as developed, so my guess is she was probably 12. The younger girl was about Chris's age- 10. The older girl was wearing a school girl costume- barely there plaid skirt, tight white midriff bearing top with a matching plaid tie, white thigh highs, and black mary jane high heels. She was easily wearing enough makeup to last any normal person a month.
Not to be outdone, the younger girl was wearing an equally skimpy French Maid costume, complete with fishnet thigh highs, and 5" peep toe high heel shoes, and again, a ton of makeup.
I was just shocked that any parent would find these costumes to be appropriate at that age. I realize they sell costumes that are inappropriate, but that certainly doesn't mean a parent has to buy it, right? We stopped at a small church sponsored mini-carnival, and as we were waiting in line, this family was behind us. The mom asked the older daughter if she had done her own makeup. The daughter said, "Yes, mom." The mom praised her on how well done it was.
Now, the mom wasn't like skanked out, or anything. She wasn't young, or overly old. Probably in her late 30's, dressed conservativly, with light makeup. So, I'm just wondering why in the world these girls were able to leave the house looking like they were working a corner, instead of trick or treating.
And they were by far not the only example of skanky costumes we saw tonight. I've seen some questionable ones in the past, certainly, but typically on kids who were 15-16 or older, not on kids still in junior high. I pointed these examples out to Raegan several times, and told her if she EVER tried walking out the door in clothing like that, she would be grounded for a month, and those clothes would be burned.
She agreed, though, that it was an inappropriate way to dress, and showed no desire to skank herself up.

It was only like 34 degrees out, and I was wearing long sleeves and a jacket and was still cold. I don't know how that girl was walking around in her little short skirt and barely there shirt. She didn't have coats on the kids she was taking out either. Ugh.
