Lily's 1st Place Costume (photo essay)

Lily had a great time with her costume this year because it got her ALOT of attention.  ALMOST everyone who saw her started laughing and several people wanted to take her picture.  My beautiful 8 year old decided NOT to be a fairy or a princess this year (YAY - good for her!).... INSTEAD she was a mouse caught in a mouse trap!!! I thought it was hilarious!!!!!!!!  I walked along beside her wearing an "Exterminator" cap.  My daughter's home made Halloween costume won first place in our Dayton, Ohio neighborhood parade and costume contest this morning.  The category she won in was "Creepy Crawlies".  They have several different categories like "Still LIfe", "Mardi Gras", "Disney Characters' and on and on and the neighborhood shows up for a fun morning.

I especially enjoyed when we were walking back up to the gazebo, through the "tunnel" of high school kids in the marching band as they were playing their songs.  It was fun hearing the music and seeing the kids as they caught site of Lily's costume.  They would crack smiles or start laughing and almost mess up on their songs - it was hilarious and a real mood lifter.  I had a great time this morning.

My son's costume was cute too - he was a recycling bin.   Below are some photos from this morning's fun.

Finally I caught up to him for more photos!

"Mommy it's a little cold out here" says the mouse, "I am glad you made me wear a warm costume" ha ha ha

No more photos....... (not really - she was just trying to cover her ears she was cold) LOL

Daddy showed up with her cheese before the costume judging began HOORAY!

I loved the costume of Mr. Potato Head - his son was dressed as Woody walking beside him....

The kid in the marching band dressed as the Oscar Meyer Weiner made me laugh too!

Santa and his elves were there LMBO - they won a prize....

Needless to say it was a cute and fun morning.  I was proud of Lily for coming up with such a cute and good idea and winning first place with it.  She is pleased with the really nice sweatshirt she got and her prize bag.  I am happy I got a nice sweatshirt too for walking along with her (exterminator).  We had a great time.

Kimber, it's SOOOO GREAT to see a community celebrating the FUN of Hallowe'en! You're kids are adorable and the costumes were great. Have a safe and happy evening!

Thanks Sandre - it is a tradition - our entire neighborhood community has this tradition every year. The police block off the boulevard and the kids meet at the gazebo and there is a parade with the highschool marching band, a firetruck and a police car. The kids line up according to category and parade around then the marching band hands out candy bags then they announce the winners and hand out prizes and everyone goes home.

Thank you! The costumes weren't that hard to make either - the "trap" was a backpack inside a box and duct tape and aluminum foil and the roll from inside a roll of wrapping paper took care of the rest of it. The mouse part was just felt a gray sock gray sweats and fabric glue.

Thank you Purrrr I am just thrilled that she didn't want to be all girly princess / fairy like the other girls in her class and she was thrilled, happy and energized when the other girls in her class laughed at her. She had a good time being different and enjoyed herself. It shows me if she is strong enough to do her own thing this young then I am teaching her well - she won't bend to peer pressure easy when she is older. It makes whatever I have to face easier knowing my baby is strong too!

Thank you - we had fun making it - she has been giggling about it ever since she picked it out not telling people what she was going to be wanting it to be a "surprise" they were all assuming she was going to be tinkerbell again or something! LOL Their faces were great! I spent most of the morning laughing and enjoying my child's creativity

How creative of Lily! Congratulations to her. The most creative in our area was my next door neighbor - she was a washing machine (a box that had a washing machine name on it, 2 knobs, and she made hole for the wash to go in). I loved it.

Back in January we were looking at some costumes online and she saw something similar - i can't even remember what it was (I think it was a racoon in a cage or a fly on flypaper or something) and we got to talking about it a little bit and she came up with the idea that it would be funny to be a baby mouse in a mouse trap. Then we started brainstorming and working on it together as to how we could make it happen. I am so proud of her for coming up with the idea to do something so neat. I am also glad she is past that whole princess fairy costume thing!!! Seeing people react to her was the best for me!! It really lifted my spirits!
