I swear by zinc when taken in the very earlystages of an oncoming head cold. As soon as I have those symptoms that come before the onset of a head cold, I start taking zinc products (as directed) and I swear that the cold goes away faster every time.
Zicam, I think, it the same basic product, only with a pricier label.
