The prominent Houston lawyer John O'Quinn, 68, one of the lawyers responsible for the state of Texas' settlement from the tobacco industry, was killed Thursday morning in a traffic accident.
According to the Houston Chronicle, O'Quinn was riding in a black SUV at about 8 am that crossed over two medians and oncoming traffic lanes before slamming into a tree west of downtown Houston. Both O'Quinn and the car's other passenger were killed.
The accident's cause has not yet been determined, although police stated wet pavement and excessive speed were being investigated as possible causes. It was unclear whether or not O'Quinn was driving.
O'Quinn is reported to have won over $1.5 billion for his firm.He made his name in plaintiff litigation, with his most famous successful cases being the aforementioned tobacco settlement of $17.3 billion for the state of Texas and breast implant cases that resulted $100 million in settlements.
He also represented plaintiffs in various hazardous drug cases, most notably winning a $1 billion verdict against Wyeth Laboratory.
