Government says the Recession is Over!! REALLY?????????

                                                     According to yahoo news today, the recession is reported to be on the downswing, almost over, if one believes the reports from the Government.
                                                 Government supported spending ((I thought all spending was government supported)) on cars and homes has brought the  recession level down, the worst reported level since the 30's. The 8,ooo dollar
promo for first time home buyers has also reported sucess in lowering the level. Promo ends on Nov.30, unless the Gov. extends. We have a 21.4% increase in exporting U.S. goods, best increase since late '96.
                                       I'd like to ask YOU what your neighborhood looks like right now...Mine has every 4th home abandoned due to foreclosure, every other rental stands empty. The 8,ooo for new home buyers might be ok, but why did the Gov. not also help those about to lose their homes due to unemplyment, which is at a 26 year high of 9.8.... Most of my friends who became unemployed during this time are still not working, even after a year of job searching. Many lost their homes, some lost their mates due to the life stress, life changes.
                                  I'll believe the recession is over when I see folks back at work, when I see the homes filled with families again...What say ye? Believe or nay?

Yep...When we moved back to the Columbus area about a month ago, I was shocked to buy a Sunday newspaper and find 3 pages of want ads and 10 of real estate listings. It used to be the other way around. Sad, very sad.

My neighborhood has gone from mostly privately owned homes to mostly rentals. The renters move in, don't pay rent for 3 months, get evicted, then someone else moves in to do the same thing. More people are unemployed. More and more people are surrendering their animals.

There may be signs that there is light at the end of the tunnel, but I think the people are in the caboose, and it's going to be a while before we see daylight again.

Me too, Barbara. The rentals work the same way here and it is bringing in those who know how to beat the system as far as paying rent. those just happen to be the dealers, buyers and sellers of drugs, alas....

Yes, that does seem to be the case here, too. It's sad ... there's a big market for escapism when times are tough. You don't have to feel the despair. Problem is, all those things just make your problems bigger and bigger.

I don't understand why people can "work" the system and do just fine when I have someone sleeping on my couch and she can't find a way to have her own place.

You couldn't prove it here either. I've never seen so many houses for sale and so many businesses closing. Unemployment is still high here and people are still curtailing their spending.

There aren't any empty houses around me. The only rentals are full and the same people have lived in them for a couple years. Unemployment levels are still high in WA but people are spending more according to local studies. We've always been kind of outside the major trends here. We don't go as high when the economy is doing really well, but things haven't bottomed out here either.

Not too many empty houses here, but lots of empty store buildings. Yeah. I'll beleive it when the millions of Americans are back at work...Big business has ruined it for everyone but themselves. Give me a billion dollar bailout, and I'll give people jobs.

more people were employed by smaller businesses in America then "big business." help out the small businessperson and the economy will reflect it.

No, you'll never convince me of that. How many small businesses rely on a big business to keep them supplied with parts or supplies.. Let's take a GMC for example. Where do they get there supplies from? Small procuders, that supply them with parts. When then started to pull out of the US, the small compay lost their production, and therby loosing their ability to keep their doors open, if they didn't find work elsewhere.
A loud and plain HELL NO the recession is not even close to being over, there are business that are closing still....people who are being asked to take pay cuts or being laid off...our City had to let 21 Police Officers go just this week...The recession will not be over until everyone who wants to work has a job

I think the local Governing offices are cutting back on words, too, William. We just had notice that Library's are being forced to curtail opening hours by 30 per cent... saves our fat cat government a few bucks, don't 'cha know.

I'll apply that to democrats too. The so called health insurance bill is a joke and no even close to what was promised. To me that's a lie and I won't vote for a liar.

the main reason the economy looks better is simple. businesses are looking somewhat better because they have trimmed back in order to maintain a certain profit margin and we all know what trimming back means. many people want to blame the businesses for their problems but the bottom line is, if the business is not turning a profit, why should the owners bother staying in business. Most small businesses are border line profit makers anyway.

There are probably a half million people between the ages of 18~24 who are illiterate. There are no jobs for these people making it very likely many will turn to a life of crime. Nobody is DC seems to care. Nobody.

Your'e too smart to just wonder, William.... Day pay jobs are available here, but a full day's work will get the laborer only 36. bucks, not enough to live on or support a family on.That is the only option for the illiterates in my area.

We have the largest rich to poor ratio of any country in the world!!! It seems the rich are very good wool pullers and they have no empathy. We do not deserve God's blessing because of this injustice and greed. We have become a very disgraceful uncaring nation of people who like to wave the flag and insult others.

Penni , we are definately going downhill, as far a jobs go. They want our taxes but if we can't find a job, how can people pay taxes?
