The day before yesterday it was very nice outside, cool and windy but sunny. City workmen put Christmas lights up that day on the young trees that are all up and down Nicolette.
Today it is dark and rainy, and all those lights are on.
I am planning on decorating the inside of my home this weekend. The outside I ahve to wait on, the association is planning to pressue clean and paint, so I can't decorate the outside yet.
I work part-time for Kohl's. They do their Christmas set in September. It gets earlier and earlier every year. At least our town waits until November to hang theirs up. The only reason they do it before Thanksgiving is because we have a "Festival of Lights" parade.
We've been known to put the lights up early, since it's a lot more comfortable than freezing in December, but we don't turn them on until closer to the season. I just think you should wait until after Thanksgiving to turn on Christmas lights. A month is long enough.
On the other hand, some businesses have discovered that putting up white lights and leaving them on all year vastly boosts their business. I get burnt out on Christmas colors after a while.
Also, people have been hanging Halloween lights around here for the last few years. Lit pumpkins, deep purple lights, lit tiny little bats ... odd but kinda fun, too. Some neighbors a few streets away have so many blow-up Halloween figures they have no front yard left. Talk about giving a 5-year-old nightmares! Okay, so you walk past the 12' tall Frankenstein, past the inflatable skeleton moving in the breeze, and up the steps past the ghost that inflates and deflates. Um, yah.
