Join us tonight 8-9PM ET for a live chat with pet owners. Whether you have (had) a dog, a cat, ferret, reptile, or any other animal, you’re invited! Tonight’s chat is a celebration of National Cat Day, which is today.

Topics to consider:

  • Are you a cat person? Why does a cat make a good pet?
  • In three words, how would you describe what cats are like?
  • Do you own a cat? How do you describe his or her personality?
  • Do you think it's true that dogs and cats can't get along?
  • Is your cat an indoor or outdoor cat? How do you keep him safe?
  • Do you celebrate the holidays with your cat? Will your cat be getting dressed up for Halloween?

http://media-files.gather.com/images/d422/d20/d746/d224/d96/f3/full.jpg

Did you know:

Black cats are usually the last to go in the animal shelter, especially around Halloween?
If you are the owner of a black cat, please be especially cautious of his safety this time of year. Black cats can be the victim of cruel pranks during the Halloween season.

Gather will draw five people who participate during the chat to receive 50 Gather Points™ each.

I have two cats, and they always keep me hopping. For a long time, there was just one, and he was so happy when his younger "brother" came along. It's hard to imagine them without each other. Even now, if one is in a different room of the house, the other will go looking for him.

I have a cat and a dog adopted both from a shleter. Adopted my cat when he was six weeks old, he is now ten years old, spoiled him rotten. He waits outside my bedroom door every morning meo-owing me, to tell me he is hungry and wants water. His name is Sammy, he will not drink his water without ice-cubes in the water. He also is a very finky eater, will only eat sortof cat food. He is part of our family and we are very protective over him, he is also and has always been an inside cat. He got outside one day, hid under our home, he was so scared outside never that he did not go outside again. Our dog gets along well with our cat, her name is Buttercup, she is very protective over Sammy too, Sammy is bigger than our dog. Sammy's personality is silly, friendly, lovable. We celebrate every holiday with our pets, except Holloween. Sammy loves tearing open his christmas gifts, and Sammy is also crate train, loves his crate. I really be;lieve that a cat makes a good pet just as good as our dog, it is good to have pets because it does help lower your blood pressure and stress in your life, they are good listeners. Sammy knows our moods when I am having a bad day, he does the sillest things to put a smile on your face. My three words about Sammy would have to be, loyal, friend, charming.
KittyMommy2u W. Oct 30, 2009, 8:44pm EDT
My mom used to have a teacup chihuahua at the same time she had a beefy male tabby cat. They got along fairly well, but Sebastian's instincts would kick in when they play chase games and would chase Yoda, the chihuahua, through the yard. Yoda would start yelping, like he felt he was in danger. I thought it was sort of funny. The cat didn't really mean it when his instincts would kick in. I think he would've felt bad if he had actually have hurt the little dog, because they actually liked each other really well. My mom's other dog was big enough to not look like a giant rat, so she didn't have this problem with the cat. The cat never hurt the dog. When I was around when this would happen, I would take pity on the dog and pick him up. Usually that's all that needed to be done to get the cat to calm down again. They were still friends and once the cat was no longer in hunt mode, they would go on as if nothing happened.

No we will nopt be dressing our animals up in Halloween custom, we do not celebrate that holiday. We keep Sammy and Buttercup safe by keeping them close to us, watch his diet, vet visits, take caution when flee season comes around, get them groom, flea baths. Sammy's personality: gentle, friendly, compassion and a good companion.

National Cat Day! Good Evening All. This should be Fun.
Would you like to start out by telling us what your Cat is like:

For instance: Purr-Litical Correctness: My Cat is Not a Bed-Hog,He is a Bed-Appreciator.
KittyMommy2u W. Oct 30, 2009, 8:51pm EDT
Akira is loving and affectionate. She loves being a lap cat. If we had a bigger bed and I didn't move around so much in bed, Akira would be willing to sleep with me. She used to try, but she doesn't like to be disturbed when I need to shift positions. She has her own chair in the living room and loves to sleep in it. She is there right now. When I come home, she greets me at the door. Partly because she is hungry, but she really looks forward to seeing me, too. She loves those little bunny fluff balls that pet stores sell. She loves empty toilet paper tubes, too. Lately, she has been lying on top of the paper grocery sack I gave to her to play with. And, she will tear up the paper bag just to get my attention. She sometimes does this if she thinks I've been on the computer too long and should be paying attention to her.

we have a lot of feral cats around the farm here. they only come close at night.
KittyMommy2u W. Oct 30, 2009, 8:58pm EDT
I bet that makes for great mouse and rat control. Does your area have a trap and release program that spays and neuters ferral cats to control their population? I think sometimes these programs make sure they have their essential vaccinations sometimes, too.

My pets bring me joy when I am feeling a little blue. They keep me active. The dogs love to run and the cats love to be loved. They are forever getting into trouble which makes me laugh at them that much more.
RobbinLynn B. Oct 29, 2009, 8:13pm EDT
Charles, I know what you mean, they sure are a Blessing.
Kim B. Oct 29, 2009, 8:14pm EDT
I love all animals. My pets are so special to me. they entertain me too. my cat only lets me love him when he decides it's okay. if he doesn't want to be petted, he bites me. Why i call him Punk
Charles Evans Oct 29, 2009, 8:38pm EDT
LOL...I have one that sits outside the door and hollers for 3 hours.... I call him SCREAMER.... lol

I have a Question! Why are cat Condo's so Expensive? I see a few on e-bay and I couln'd believe what they wanted for them.
Charles Evans Oct 29, 2009, 8:17pm EDT
You will have to make one yourself... much cheaper and I know you can do it. Nothing more gratifying than saving money and making items from scratch.
RobbinLynn B. Oct 29, 2009, 8:20pm EDT
Yes, I probably could,I just was wondering why they are so high priced?
Charles Evans Oct 29, 2009, 8:23pm EDT
Its the old sales gimmic.... they prey on the fact that people love their animals as children and would buy them most anything....
KittyMommy2u W. Oct 30, 2009, 9:03pm EDT
Agreed. That's one reason we don't have one. I haven't been able to convince my brother, who has the skill to do so, to make my kitty one.

Gizmo the pomeranian knows he is special. He knows how to handle people so they will bend to his will. LOL. He is so much like a child. If you scold him he will run to his special place and you can actually see a tiny tear in his eye. Makes you wonder if he can read your thoughts well I think he can...LOL.

Do your pets like t go out in the cold?
Charles Evans Oct 29, 2009, 8:30pm EDT
Gizmo the pomeranian loves the cold. Their natural breeding and heritage came from snow laden areas so he hot natured. Nothing for him to be sitting outside in a mud hole during winter time....lol
Cecilia Lee Oct 29, 2009, 8:40pm EDT
Luckily it doesn't get so cold where I live (in Southern California), but one of our cats love to go outside whenever she can. The other one likes to stay in all day except to roll around in the sunshine. But then at night she scratches the door to be let out. Doesn't know where she goes. But I do notice that their fur gets thicker in the winter and they sleep on the bed more as the nights get chillier.
Michelle S. Oct 29, 2009, 8:48pm EDT

What do you do when the weather gets cold for your animals outside. I cover the doghouse with insulation and place a light bulb near the door so they stay nice and warm even on the coldest of nights....
RobbinLynn B. Oct 29, 2009, 8:31pm EDT
We only have one Cat and He has never been out, without being in a carrier to visit the vet.
Charles Evans Oct 29, 2009, 8:41pm EDT
Can you imagine what he might think if he was to ever experience the great outdoors...
Michelle S. Oct 29, 2009, 8:48pm EDT

Janet H. Oct 29, 2009, 8:29pm EDT
I'd never heard of National Cat Day. I have 12 indoor rescue cats. I am mad at some of my cats though because they spray in the house even though they are neutered. We had drywall and floors replaced to get rid of the cat urine smell and had the whole house cleaned by a professional--and now they are spraying on the furniture. We love them but don't want the house to smell, so what to do? We have tried all of our vet's suggestions.
Charles Evans Oct 29, 2009, 8:32pm EDT
The cats are marking their territories between each other. Perhaps put the ones that get along together in a seperate area. It would probably be beter to revarnish the floors ratehr than replace them which can be expensive.... I wish you luck....
RobbinLynn B. Oct 29, 2009, 8:32pm EDT
Janet, Hi! I have not either, until today. 12 Cats! Good Lord! How do you keep track of them all?
RobbinLynn B. Oct 29, 2009, 8:33pm EDT
Charles, Good Idea.
Kim B. Oct 29, 2009, 8:33pm EDT
Hi Janet. I hear you. My one cat is fixed and he keeps spraying inside. he has ruined my one couch. Tonight was the worse. I am determined to try and get it downstairs tonight. It's not big, but i can't take the smell. i live in a small apartment. He also gets in my closet and if something has fallen off a hanger, he sprays it too. Why i'm not a cat person. That smell you can't get rid of. he won't stay outside either. he screams by the door the whole time he's out. scaredy cat. but, i still love him, just hate this part of him.
Kim B. Oct 29, 2009, 8:34pm EDT
And I have only one cat. No territory marking here. Just him being a punk.
Cecilia Lee Oct 29, 2009, 8:38pm EDT
I can't imagine the smell of 12 cats marking their territory! But I've found that Nature's Miracle does wonders for cleaning up the odors. The problem is that one cat sprays and then all the other ones feel the need to mark THEIR territory.
RobbinLynn B. Oct 29, 2009, 8:38pm EDT
Kim, Hi! Do you tink sometimes about getting another cat, so the one you have is not lonely?
RobbinLynn B. Oct 29, 2009, 8:39pm EDT
Ed (hubby) wants another one, but I'am not really sure it is a Good-Idea!
Janet H. Oct 29, 2009, 8:44pm EDT
I used to really love cats but I am so sick of the cat pee around the house. It makes me embarrassed to have friends or relatives over. Some of my cats are sweet and always use the litter box but some just pee wherever they want and are now spraying on the sofa that is nearly new. The sofa has been shampooed twice in a week by the person who remodeled and redecorated our house over the past few months. I got rid of all carpets and got Pergo wood laminate floors, vinyl floors, and ceramic tile floors so they would be easier to clean.
Michelle S. Oct 29, 2009, 8:45pm EDT
hi everyone.....i hate being late. hope you guys are having a good time.
Charles Evans Oct 29, 2009, 8:46pm EDT
Most people do not realize that cats are attracted to spraying on or near anything made of leather. Cat spray is near impossible to get rid of. I find that washing the area reguarly with a mild solution of bleach and water helps on floors. NEVER mix bleach and ammonia (fresh cat urine) together...it is highly toxic to your lungs. I had a cat urinate one time ona bed spread and I ran and threw it into the sink and poured some bleach on it as I did not know. It instantly made a gas cloud that rose up into my face and I was really sick for 3 days.

and I thought cats bringing in dead birds was bad - spraying is way worse - I can easily get rid of the birds, nasty but easy

I heard pine-sole is good for tough cat stains.

trying to catch the news snow is finally gonna stop tonight - only another 1 -2" left to fall, or so they say
Janet H. Oct 29, 2009, 8:50pm EDT
None of my cats go outside so they don't bring in dead birds, but the other day my lab brought in a dead squirrel! She was running around my room and jumped on my bed SOooo proud as she waved the critter around in the air. I freaked out and started screaming and my husband came and got rid of the squirrel. My dog didn't kill it but just found it dead somewhere in the yard.

Eww! That's normal dog behavior, but it's still disgusting.

I hope there is school tomorrow - we did a lot of work on our Halloween Hall and it might all be for nothing if there is no school
Denise B. Oct 29, 2009, 8:50pm EDT
they have called off school yesterday and today - kids NEED to go back LOL
RobbinLynn B. Oct 29, 2009, 8:51pm EDT
Oh, The Kids would be so disappointed! I hope for School for them too.

I'm glad its not snowing here! Especially on the weekend we are going to the lodge at the lake with our dog club and dogs. I'm also glad it was warm this past week because our furnace went out and the repairman had to order a part and we had to wait for it to come. Its fixed now.
KittyMommy2u W. Oct 30, 2009, 9:29pm EDT
So glad it's fixed now. And, that the weather was warm enough while the part was still being shipped.

we used to have a cat named Baxter - he used to play with the fox all the time it was funny - then a big bear moved into the area and first the fox disappeared then a few days later Baxter did. There was no keeping him inside he would come in only to be fed and to warm up on really cold days. But he never wanted to stay inside very long,- we still miss him
RobbinLynn B. Oct 29, 2009, 8:54pm EDT
Oh, I'am sorry, I know you must always wonder about him.
Denise B. Oct 29, 2009, 8:54pm EDT
he was a manx cat - and three or four cats disapeared that spring, including mine and my cousins' who lives a few "blocks" away.
KittyMommy2u W. Oct 30, 2009, 9:31pm EDT
Uh-oh. The bear must've gotten the pets. Bears, cougars and coyotes are big animals that come into mind when pets go missing.
