Welcome to Today's HelpCenter™ Discussion Post!
The original Gather help series -- assisting members since 2006.
Need a little help, or have a question?
Can't find something? ...or figure out how something works?
Ask other members!

"My PC runs very slowly lately since I started spending more time on Gather. Is there something I can do to fix this?"There are three primary factors that can make your computer sluggish:
- Programs/applications running in the background that compete for system resources.
- Malicious programs like adware, spyware (malware) and viruses.
- Cluttered disk space and system files.
Fortunately, you can address each of the problem areas above quickly & easily without spending money purchasing software, tools or other solutions.Step #1: Remove Adware, Spyware, Malware/Viruses
Step #2: Deactivate Background Programs/Applications
Vista users may need to ensure that inactive icons are not hidden from view (right click on the Windows Taskbar, then click "Properties" and the "Notification Area" tab).
Step #3: Computer and File Maintenance
These tasks can be completed using various tools provided by Windows, or a significantly simpler method can be utilized by downloading and installing the program Tune-Up Utilities². You can download the 2009 version for free, but you will need to pay for it after the fully functional 30 day trial period. However, if you install the 2008 version (which is identical to 2009), you can use it free forever. It will help you eliminate many computer problems quickly and easily.
You may download Tune Up Utilities 2008 HERE or HERE.
When you install the program, you will be requested to enter a name and organization on the installation window. You may enter anything you wish in these fields. However, you must enter EITHER of the codes/keys below where required:
LLYLB-ASGHK-ANKTM-DBYKS-QXQMT-ESRYC
or
RFEAH-CDXKX-UMFBW-GSCES-YFWCM-WUHWB
Using even a few of the many features of this program (or similar), you will gain a comprehensive assessment of your computer's current performance and overall system health...as well as the tools to restore your computer's speed and operational efficiency.
¹ Definition files are required for anti-virus and other protective software to perform their work. These files contain information needed to identify viruses and other forms of harmful software that may reside on your computer.
² Many computer maintenance programs similar to Tune-Up Utlities are available. However, Tune-Up Utlities (2008 edition) has a full range of tools, is problem-free, does not require registration, is very easy to use and understand, and can be obtained and used at no cost. Hence, it ranks among my favorite products for computer users of any skill level.
Awwwwwww...you were counting the days?
It's great to see you again....AND you're FIRST!!
Yes, counting the days. You were missed.
40 days and 40 nights...isn't that biblical?
Strange that immediately on your return you would focus on the exact problem I'm having - very slow computers. Had a lot of problems over the last wk and my son in law worked on my desktop for a couple hrs. Pretty much everything is OK now but Gather especially is VERY SLOW!
Wilma,
The problem you are experiencing on Gather may not be related to your computer. I have also noted increased latency (slowness) on Gather that does not exist on other sites.
Please let me know if you have any questions about the advice or programs above!
...................................
Hello Randee! It's nice to see you!
Good morning Bob! ...I haven't been around lately, but I do need to pop by a few of your posts and comment about something. See ya soon!
Thanks
Linda,
This might be a browser-specific problem.
A critical test would be using a different browser temporarily. Have you tried this? Are you able to access your group(s) using Firefox, IE or Chrome, etc.?
Linda,
Do you have any other browsers available to you....like Internet Explorer? I would like to see if you have the same problem in another browser. That will tell me if the cause is Firefox, or something else on your computer (or Gather).
What I can do, is click on the group name "more" go to the group, find the article, click on it and then get in that way.
Linda,
I was unable to return last night to respond (sorry!), but I assume that you are using a Mac?
If so, then your alternate browser options are fairly limited. Have you tried using Safari to access your groups? When you do, does it work different (better, worse) than when using Firefox?
oh never mind
YOU ARE BACK!!!!~=D
honorary welcome back SWAT for you~ =D
Ouch! ...thanks for the swat, it made me warm all over.
*runs*
Thanks for the warm welcome everyone!
I hope to catch up on questions and commenting over the next couple of days. Plus, look for the daily TOS discussion center posts to begin again, as well as a new daily 'Content Clinic"!
Thanks DN! ...it's great to be back!
Hello DD! ...I'm sorry that I wasn't around to address your publishing problem. I see that Gather did (eventually) get around to responding, although I haven't read through the response. If their advice doesn't work for you, please let me know.
oops...did I just say that out loud?
Their answer was to do my post in word and cut and paste into the post area because 30 minutes is too long to keep the post space open. Must be something new since I've been doing this since January with no problem.
DD,
Email notifications have been acting up recently. I haven't identified any common denominator, as it seems to affect random threads.
I do agree though that 30 minutes is too long to leave the editor open. It may have been working before...but other factors (browser updates, etc.) may now be impacting your ability to keep an editing session intact.
Have you tried clearing your cache AND Gather cookies? This may allow you to remove an errant file or setting that is impacting your editing sessions.
Johnice,
Unfortunately it's a reality in any online environment that work can be stolen and used by others without authorization. If this work was stolen and used here on Gather, then I'm certain that the matter will be addressed quickly. If the work is being used elsewhere, then it is not within Gather's control. HOWEVER, Gather may still take action against this member's account.
If you provide me with a link (URL) to your work, and the stolen counterpart, I can provide you with some additional advice.
Shall I resend the e-mail?
Everything is included and I do expect some action as I am patient and have no intent on making a lot of noise as it is not my way! I do expect that some action would be taken if only information given to the person that she should know her behavior has been noticed and reported.
Johnice,
I am not in a position to resolve the situation for you. However, if you send me a gather mail message with information I can offer you input and advice.
FYI, you may click the small envelope along the upper right-hand side of this comment to send me a mail message.
I've received your message. I'll look it over and get back to you.
Johnice,
I have read all of the posts involved, and you both have actually made a few mistakes...mistakes that are quite easy to stumble into though.
I'll send you details in a mail message.
Johnice,
No problem at all! ...please feel free to stop by anytime. No question is too small or too large!
I hope that my response to you, and viewpoint, were OK.
Thanks Kat...I hope can catch up with everything!
Thank you Pam! ...have a wonderful day!
Hello and thanks Darlene! ...one of my goals is to get the "Drama Guide" up and running again as soon as possible!
STILL a showoff I see.
The Featured Question today is great! I'm going to bookmark this one. I love Tune-Up Utilities! I bought it last spring. They are already asking me to buy the 2010 version. Do I need to do that? Will they disable my 2009 version at the end of the year?
"They are already asking me to buy the 2010 version. Do I need to do that? Will they disable my 2009 version at the end of the year?"
No, your 2009 version will last forever. The 2010 version (and beyond) may provide a few new tools and design changes, but nothing significant or necessary. Only consider upgrading if you upgrade to Windows 7 at some point.
Where ya been, boy???
I thought you fell off the edge of the earth or something.............
Miss ya, you big lug, you!!!
Thanks BERF!!! ...I needed to step away principally to deal with my Mother's care. I simply haven't been able to devote any time and attention to answering questions or commenting...but I'm baaackkkkk!!!
I've always thought you were magical Penni.
Thanks Alex....hopefully you've been off doing something fun, or interesting at least (or more interesting than Gather, which may not be too difficult to find).
(Also, you can ignore my earlier email about spacing!)
Sorry about the delay Ann. I've been busy clearing out unrelated content from my groups...what a pain!
I would be happy to post instructions below...what site are you primarily interested in? (I can then provide a custom answer).
Ann,
You should be able to use the code as you did previously. Nothing has really changed, except that Gather eliminated the extra step of opening the comment HTML editor. Please feel free to post your code in a comment here, and then perhaps I can see what's wrong.
Also, you can direct me to any site and image and I'll try it myself.
Thanks!
Ann,
You also likely know this already, but you must add some text into your comment in addition to the image code. Even a single character, like a period '.' will be enough.
God gives life to Adam
Thanks Matthew! ...I hope to respond to pings and mail messages soon. Have a great day!
Thanks for stopping by everyone! ...have a great afternoon!
Thanks Brenda! ...I was going to ping you, but I simply haven't had any time today to reach out to anyone yet. It's great to see you again!
Please leave your question below, and other members will hopefully be able to help out in my absence. If not, I will respond to open inquiries and problems when I return.
Thank You!
Why can't I make 156,000 points while the apple pie is baking??
I wasn't able to return last night to join the party.
I hope you made some progress on that point goal R B!
I've asked some questions from those who work for gather and never did get any answers!!
I am wonder if there is a way once you are already a member of a group to put it in my list of favorites? you can do that when you join one now, but I see no way to add those we were already in.
do you happen to know how to add a birthday/anniversary calendar to my own group? I see it on other group home pages but can't figure out how to add it
Thanks for helping out Marsha Lune!
Hello Marsha!
It is quite easy to add the birthday modules to your group(s). If you can point me to the group that has the one you like the most, I'll walk you through how to add it to yours.
Hey 'Jack'! ...I LOVE the new icon!
