Born to an alcoholic father, not her choice.
Resilience, her only life force, she believed in dreams.
A childhood tomboy, interest in flying began at a fair.
More at home in the sky than on land,
Amelia Earhart soared into the stratosphere
for pleasure aboard "The Canary" and Electra.
Fear of inclement weather couldn't curtail her flight plans.
An independent woman of many firsts,
she bravely flew alone across the Atlantic.
The aviation queen set speed and altitude records.
A famous feminist and best selling author,
she promoted products, captivated fans
with her beauty, style and persevering spirit.
Her luggage still on market today.
The Ninety-Nines organization exists in 2009.
Commercial airlines and passenger flights persist.
With expert co-pilot Noonan by her side,
she embarked on an equatorial flight around the world.
Her disappearance remains a mystery.
Were faulty radio signals and morse code to blame?
Theories and rumors prevail.
Still we wonder where her plane did collide.
A long, expensive search proved a dead end.
Her missing skeleton knows whether she lies
in a watery grave or soars with Eagles in Heaven.

Jen you fit the profile of a hero quite well. As a teacher you inspire others to learn. I takes a very special person to become a teacher especially one that helps to mold very young minds.
Are you still an avid reader, outside of gather?
You should share this style with one of your teacher friends who teachers middle or Jr high students, it would be interesting to see what/who a class of young writers would portray.
Good job pretty lady.
a little assonance poetry with photos
I wish we lived closer Jen, hiking together would be incredible. Of course I'm including James in the thought.
Amateur radio operators heard her calling for help 3 days after she had disappeared, and the Coast Guard confirmed it. They could not see her plane which must have been intact for them to use the radio, so it is a mystery which island she landed on. Most of todays historians believe it was on Gardner Island. An old shoe and a compact were found there and they believe it was hers. The next expedition will probably find more clues.
Wonderful writing!
Try it at a contest.
tastes like life
That's good practice.
She leaves us in mystery, always wondering what happened.
