Ever since it was reported that pigs at the Minnesota State Fair had swine flu, agricultural officials have been trying to assure people that pork is safe to eat. Who do they think they’re fooling? Even if it doesn’t come from pigs infected with swine flu, pork still isn’t safe to eat.
Pork is often contaminated with harmful bacteria and parasites, and factory-farmed pigs are sprayed with pesticides and fed antibiotics. Scientists believe that overuse of antibiotics on factory farms has given rise to antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Bacon, ribs, and sausage are high in saturated fat and cholesterol and can cause heart disease, obesity, diabetes, and certain cancers.
Filthy, crowded pig farms are breeding grounds for disease. Between 30 and 50 percent of pigs in the U.S. have been infected with some strain of swine flu, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Healthy, humane alternatives to pork include great-tasting mock meats like Smart Dogs, Gimme Lean ‘sausage,” and Yves Veggie Pizza Pepperoni Slices. See www.GoVeg.com for more information.
