Yes, we have finally managed to make it to the actual competition in this season of So You Think You Can Dance. If you happened to tune in on Monday Night, you would have had a chance to see the top twenty in action working on dances choreographed by some of those top So You Think You Can Dance choreographers. We also learned from Nigel Lythgoe that a chair at the judge's table is left open for Paula Abdul anytime she wants to stop by. Will she be joining the judges on that show? Something tells me we might see her pop up at some point. Tonight, the competition finally gets underway. We will see the dancers paired off and have to learn choreography.
However, we already have some issues here! We've already lost one of the top twenty due to an illness. Billy Bell became ill following the taping for last night's performance, and he had to be replaced just before the competition began. The one that replaced him apparently only had hours to prepare with his partner. There is another injury as well, but no replacement yet in that second case. Billy was replaced by Brandon Dumlao. The other injury is Noelle Marsh. She was not able to perform this week, but if she doesn't perform next, she will have to leave the series. Now let's talk about this week's show. No results show this week due to the Baseball playoffs. That means the judges have the decision on their hands on who to cut this week. One boy and one girl will be going home this week.
The night began with a high energy performance of the jive by Channing & Phillip. While it was a good performance and a great way to kick things off, it wasn't a great performance. They had some good comments from the judges and some criticism they can take to heart for next week. The next performance was a hot and steamy Broadway performance with Ashleigh and Jakob that received great comments from all of the judges. Ashleigh definitely has stepped it up, and she has shown why she was chosen. However, the next performance is one of the low lights of the night with a hip hop performance by Ariana and Peter. These two are far out of the element, and the judges, especially Nigel, have nothing positive to say to them. The surprise of the night has to be Russell. Because of his partner's injury, he had to dance with his choreographer instead. Performing a fox trot, he came out and did well. The judges see him going places.
One of my favorite performances of the night was by Victor and Bianca with a contemporary performance choreographed by Travis Wall. Victor was amazing in this performance, and the judges loved them. Bianca did receive some constructive comments. As did Kevin in the next performance. The cha-cha was hot, but he needs some work still. Karen is hot though, and the performance was amazing. Next up was a stellar performance by Ryan & Ellenore, but the ones most watched are Brandon Dumlao and Pauline with a Smooth Waltz. Brandon came in to replace Billy. The two had no problems with performance and chemistry, but Brandon definitely had problems with technique. Nigel had the harshest of comments. A strong hip hop performance by Legacy and Kathryn and a disco performance by Nathan and Mollee wrap up the performances until the bottom four are chosen and they need to dance for their lives.
The bottom four this week are Brandon, Russell, Paulina and Ariana. Seeing Russell here is certainly surprising, especially after the judges praised his performance so much. Russell's name being called earned some boos from the audience. Once the four perform their solos, the judges need to pick who is going home. That decision is never an easy one, but this week we see Brandon Dumlao and Ariana Debose sent home. Their time at So You Think You Can Dance. Sad to see Brandon eliminated so soon after he is brought back. However, sending Russell home now with the potential he has to continue on and gain viewers would be stupid. Check out below for some of tonight's best performances and a full lists of songs used to dance on this week's show. Next week, we will see the top eighteen perform.
