Rant:Leaving gather + my helping you

This was origanally an article about  leaving gather and helping gathe members. But that disappearing so now its a new rant about leaving gather, deleting friends, and a rant of disappearing article.


Unfortunately society today  has turned people into "its all about me" frame of mind.  Technology has really helped here with IM cell phones facebook/myspace, internet in general why should anyone care about anyone else?

Today's world has turned the art of not talking to anyone into reallity. If you don't feel like talking just send him/her to viocmeal. Or text them a message... What ever happened to old fashioned answering the ---- phone?

If you're like me and you have over 500+ friends here on gather it can be hard to keep track of whats going on in all your friend lives. It can also lead t you missing articles from your friends. My suggestion delete friend who aren't friends of your anymore.

A lot of people who have left gather for various reasons from not having enough time to gather anymore,change in earning points effecting how much they earn. To a fight with someone that forced them into a situation where they felt they just had to leave gather... How do you do this? This answer will be answered in the next paragraph but first there's one more thing I need to write about!

Hopefully you're real friends have given you a way to stay in contact with them now that they're gone from gather. If you want to trim down the number of friend you have to a more manageable size, but some of your friends have left... You need to check or rather you should check to see if they're still an active gather member. To do that you have two options.

I guess you can check out peoples profiles if they have been inactive for over 6 month then delete them chances are they are not going to return. Also if someone has nothing posted ie articles,photos  and or video then they're probably gone
The best way to check if a person is still around is, you can check to see when was the last time they signed in on their profile. Click on profile and scroll down on the left side under their icon you should see this.

The Basics
  • Last signed in: Oct 27, 2009
That means the last time I signed in was today Oct 27,2009 and that I'm still an active member. However just because I a person hasn't signed in for a month or so doesn't mean they're inactive it just means either they're unable, they're busy or possibly on vacation lucky person hat he/she is!

I wish Gather had a way of eliminating people who have not visited in six months or a year. In the groups list of members are people who have not been on Gather in years.

Recently, I pulled up a friend's profile I haven't heard from in a while. The last time she logged in was January 2009. But I didn't delete her because she may be ill, or something else going on in her life. I know she's an elderly woman and grandmom. But I hope you don't leave gather. I really enjoy your articles.

I was offline for nearly a year a few years ago and I am thankful none of the web groups I was in at the time deleted me while I was gone! My dearest friends wrote to me and on rare occasions I would get in touch with a couple of them. I was in a place in my life where I just tucked me away and hid from the world until I was ready to come crawling back. Real friends understood, they were there waiting for me when I returned.

Some leave for 6+ months and do find their way back, though. The way I see it is that if they aren't active they aren't in the feed and they aren't bothering me none. When they come back I'll see their stuff pop up in the feed and all's well. :)

I try and do a little Gathering every weekend, but it's not unusual for me to disappear for a few months at a time to get my real life in order. A mom with a FT job and PT college can really take a lot out of me!

I come into gather every day the only difference is I dont stay for hours.I have to keep moving around as I get cramps on my feet and legs. and they really hurt.

I have over 700 Gather friends, I have thought of going through and doing that golds, but I have learned that a lot of people do come back...and I really like to see what's up with them when they do check in from time to time...

plus I do have a file of live frinds...those who do come in regularly....

I left for the summer due to lack of time. I am back and if Gather would delete accounts that aren't used for 6 mos or so it would save me alot of maintenance time on deleting friends.

I'm certainly one who cannot keep up with articles. To be honest, I RARELY click on anything just because it is in my friend feed. I am still doing my best to return comment for comment, but it seems like it's ending up to be more view for comment because as of right now I have over 500 comments to return. I love Gather, just don't have the hours! But I'm still hoping to catch up!! And, of course I still do my PIF & HH groups, which is why I'm here now!

I've wondered if I earn so few points here because I don't have enough friends. At least once a month I try to visit everyone on my list (nowhere near the size of your list.) I do find people who don't have anything I'm interested in reading more often than I find people who have left.

There are some people that haven't been to Gather in over a year. And, they never deleted themselves. My first friend on Gather did do a disappearing act. She wrote a post saying she was back..

I know what you mean about not being able to keep up. I've only deleted a few people from my friends list through the years, mainly because they seemed more interested in arguing or were just at severe odds with my philosophy. Otherwise I take a laissez-faire approach. I guess maybe I'm a little too lackadaisical but maybe it's just my chronic fatigue syndrome. If the Gather site worked faster (or if I got broadband) it would be much better. Otherwise just do the best you can and if someone goes away, that's life. I get busy and am unable to get on the computer, I dont have a connection at my home in the country and sometimes spend 4 or 5 days out there. I do come back though.
