An Old Homestead

Traveling on what is called by some locals the Old Stage Coach Road but more commonly know as the Untanum Road, you come across an old dry land wheat farm. There was never any irrigation here and the farmers had to rely on mother nature to water the crops. This old place has been abandoned for years although the land is still farmed. Still no irrigation.

This property is posted no trespassing so I had to take these photos from the road.

The house is large the surrounding area overgrown.

About 1988 I took a picture of the barn which is now the pile of wood in front of these two outbuildings. That photo hangs on my wall.

Blown over from strong winds common to this area. This outbuilding has seen better days.

Our homestead looked about like this...even the land was still farmed...until a prairie fire leveled it. :-(

I love these old homesteads ,the barns and homes ! It is sad when you know one so well ,and have to watch it 'die' ! A wonderful essay.

I always think about the people who used to live in these quiet places. Somewhere in Yakima county is a farm that used to belong to my paternal great grandparents. Perhaps, it too, has remnants remaining of their former lives as farmers of the land. I have visited the homestead of my mother's parents, which still remains within the family. The only hint of the lives lived there was a bed-spring, and an old culvert my grandfather had fashioned by hand from a log...

me too I have found an old plow left where it was broken in the sagebrush. My brother found what was left of an old wagon some years ago

Great series.... I really like the second photo, as it shows the three layers of sky... the dark, what's going to come? layer. The clear blue brilliance of the middle layer. The cotton ball fluffy clouds on the lower strata.... I also like the perspective this is shot from. thank you!
