I finally jumped on the Twilight bandwagon after almost a year since the movie release. I took a week and read all four books and I'll admit I was hooked with Bella and Edwards story. However...I was not satisfied that the movie deviated greatly from the first book and different characters in the book said lines in the movie. I understand creative license is usually accepted, and often leads to a new income for the author with new movie/series tie-in books, but they also claim they wanted to remain true to the books and the fans of the books.
My problem with this, and it's just my personal opinion, is that true die hard loyal fans, while thrilled to see their beloved characters brought to life, would be disappointed that the screen adaptation fell short of the book. I found many scenes in Twilight that I would have loved to see in the movie.
I also have the same opinion of True Blood, the HBO series based on Charlaine Harris' novels about Sookie Stackhouse. I have read, and loved the books and characters, yet I was sorley disappointed with the series. I love the series don't get me wrong, but it deviates from the book and it's irritating.
I'm the kind of person who reads for the thrill of leaving reality for however long it take me to read the book. I enter their world, feel their joys and sadness, feel like I know them and watching a movie or book that deviates noticably from the core of the book is so frustrating.
I have a favourite series, Christine Feehan's Dark series about her sexy Carpathians and I couldn't bear if it were made in to a visiual adaptation. Not only would it be incredably difficult to find the right actors for the parts but if it deviated there is a whole website of fans who would notice and very likely share my opinion.
The Bridget Jones books are the same. So much happened in the books that would have fit into the movie so perfectly, but didn't.
It may just be me, but it's frustrating to say the least.

When it comes to books being turned in to either movies or a tv show I try to look at them at too separate things. Only because there are things that are in the books that can't be conveyed on screen. Something just aren't going to work no matter how hard you try. So changes have to be made.
Over all I think they have done the best that can, but that is only my opinion of course.
