BORN AGAIN...
The sun is barely up
on a new, so far baggage-free day.
A handful of us are moving across
the last abandoned paddy,
almost home.
Ahead,
nearing the first bunker,
Scottie glances at me,
a widening grin on his face.
I swivel my head
and pass it to invisible faces,
silhouetted against a blinding sun.
The moment I swivel it back,
a thunderous BOOM hits like lightening
close behind.
I don’t remember getting hurled to the ground,
attempting to crawl,
just my eyes opening on a blank screen,
as my brain reboots.
For an instant,
I’m born again,
nameless, history-less,
whereabouts unknown
The screen quickly fills
with smoke, dust,
and tiny debris
pierced by orange beams.
I feel blood seep from somewhere
and what had earlier passed for reality
suddenly returns in sound,
as the agonizing moans of briefly-forgotten brothers
jolts me to my feet.
I must find them,
I am not an only child.

Thanks, Ron.
Screw you Dick Cheney.
There are a few grammar glitches in here -- in the line "as my brain is reboots," remove the "is"; in the line "a thunderous BOOM hits light lightening," did you mean "like lightning?"
So very well done, and worthy of publication!
Your duty, that you must find the others because you are 'not an only child.'
well written, thanks for sharing
Love this one as I do all your work; always written with so much feeling.
