Peak Color Week at Skidway Lake

This week, our region is experiencing the most intense autumn color of the season.  There are so many shades of colors!

Due to heavy rain, some of the trees gave up their leaves, so we have glorious colored trees next to bare ones.  The burning bushes are engulfed in flames.  The evergreens lend their color for contrast.

There won't be any outdoor playing here until next summer! Well, there will be snowman building and sledding. Time to get out the rake and clean up!

Our new gutters are already loaded with leaves beaten down by the rain.

The oak tree above turns gold, while the one next to it looks brown.  A third oak is red:

I'm glad I shot these photos now.  Here comes another rain storm!

Looks and sounds like a wonderful place -- at least one of our relatives lives in Michigan. Years ago we visited South Huron and that was a cool place. I love those white birch trees and also the quaking aspens are cool -- there are some south of here by Cordova. And we were lucky to have our burning bush come back into life. Yours are especially spectacular! Gee -- it's all starting to remind me of an old Moody Blues song. Why haven't I taken more photos lately? (Probably because it's been so rainy and cold). Thanks for sharing this magnificent and magical travelogue!!

recently i learned that there is a type of oak the red oak... oak leaves turn brown but some stay on the tree during the winter.

That's true, Kathryn, the leaves do turn brown and some stay on the tree. I've also found out that oak leaves do not biodegrade like other leaves. That means raking, burning and even raking the leaves out of the lake....but not until summer, of course!

Always love your photo essays from the lake and around your home. These shots are gorgeous! MN has also hada wet and cold Fall, but the colors came out the last couple of days. Your essay is inspiring me to get out of the house and take a hike by the St. Croix this afternoon (in between rain showers!).

Ours is also at peak color, and endless storms have many trees bare. Those lovely yellow ones below my windows are bare already.

Gorgeous photos Jan. The trees at the top of our mountains are bare. The lower level trees are hanging on to their leaves for dear life. Soon they too will be bare.

Absolutely lovely to move from place to place following the season's glory. Ours ended three weeks ago, but photos like these enhance the memories. One year we followed fall south -- an incredible excursion from Lake Superior through Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Tennesse, Kentucky, the smokey mountains.
