If you haven't heard of the story, written by Scieszka/ Smith, there is a wonderfully silly book called, "The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales". The main character of the story is a very silly take on the Gingerbread Man, except nobody wants to chase this smelly creature. THe story also has different tales about the sky falling with Chicken Little and many other fairy tales you are familiar with. Even the book jacket has stories on it. The illustrations are great and will have your children rolling with laughter.
I'm a strong believer in the best way to get children to read is to get them books that make them laugh. My son picks this book most often when he wants to be read a story.
Make a Stinky Cheese Man Doll:

Supplies:
yellow or tan wash cloth
red marker (for bacon mouth)
green marker (for olive eyes)
Rock, round block, or slice of a branch - anything that will give you the head shape. For this doll, I used a rubber block.
rubber bands
Cost to make for class: $3 for (3) 6 pack wash clothes at dollar store, $2 for rubber bands. Total $5. Can't beat that.
How to create the man:
Put block in wash cloth and tie a rubber band around it. Shape body and tie rubber bands where wrists and ankles are. One ankle I tied in a knot, just to see if I could. If you're concerned about rubber bands, that works too. draw face with markers.
Easy, easy easy craft!

My son loved it so much, he wouldn't let me have it back to take the pictures.
