Well, honestly I don't see why he received any time at all. I mean, yes it's a terrible story; sure it sucks that the women contracted AIDS and that others may have, but wasn't it also their responsibility to (a) have him tested for any STDS before having sex with him or (b) at least make him wear a condom? These were women who should have been smart enough to know all of that. I'm only 29 and I have that much sense without even having all that life experience. Sex goes both ways, and sexual responsibility goes both ways.

As for your other question, I'd be pretty upset if my husband exposed me to HIV/AIDS; however, we have a great marriage and have been entirely faithful to each other for over 10 years now so the chances of that ever happening are slim to none I figure.

You're absolutely right Victoria but I do believe the problem is that he knew that he had the virus and never shared this information with his girlfriends. That is the crime but you've definitely made very good points.

I believe that if I had dated that man and contracted the virus I would have no one to blame except myself if I had opted against wearing a condom or opted against discussing health issues with him as well.

I am happy for you that you have a mongamous relationship with your husband and have nothing to worry about in contracting any deathly disease.

I agree with you on both points, Vic. The women were irresponsible but his actions were reprehensible. In terms of sentencing, it depends. If he spends 45 years in jail, that's probably appropriate. If he gets out in 8 years for good behavior or prison over-crowding, then it's not.

It's my responsibility to lock my door for my own protection, but if I leave it unlocked at night, and someone who does not live with me comes in and stabs me, he's still committed breaking and entering, as well as assault with a deadly weapon.
In this guy's case, regardless of the women's responsibilities (and they're paying the consequences for their failure) it was his responsibility to be honest with them and take precautions to avoid passing on the infection. The latter is always everyone's responsibility, and the former became his responsibility as soon as he learned that he had the disease. That is why he was convicted and sentenced.

Let's explore this logic a little further. If you were to go out on a date with Mr. Studly and wanted to look hot so you decided to wear a dress that's only problem was keeping your breasts from tumbling out. Now, Mr. Studly being who he is, can't deal with the visual picture and drags you into the back seat of his car. While you're getting raped, will the first thought that crosses your mind be, 'oh, I shouldn't have worn this dress?'

No, Paidra Delayno. What I am saying is that a woman should be responsible when she is sexually active. Not using protection and not verifying STD status is simply irresponsible. Especially in this day and age with the prevalence of sexually transmitted diseases and people with little to no morals.

I also saw this on Oprah....these women were victims, they were in what they thought was a monogomous (sp) relationship. He knew he was hiv positive, he didnt share that news..thats the crime...all these lovely, lively woman, now have a life they did not ask for. One of the woman did go with the man to get tested, he told her everything was ok...she has no access to his medical records, he said what he needed to say. Wearing a condom is good for a one night stand, but these woman had long relationships with him and I find it unrealistic to expect them to have a sexual relationship with him and still be using comdoms when they thought they were the only ones in his life. He fooled them all.

Long term monogamous relationships with 10 women. How does that compute?

In other words, he was cheating each all of them with all of the rest of them... telling each that his relationship with her was exclusive. Nice.

John he was a pro at it..I was a skeptic when I first started watching the show, but as the women spoke and talked of how good he was at hiding the other women, and there were not 10 at once...some were earlier and some later, but several at the same time, I totally changed my opinion. Hannah said it best..that is exactly what he was doing.

They should also give him a big tattoo on his penis that says, I have aids! that way he can not keep it a secret again.

Even if the woman thought he was being monogamous surely they did not think he was a virgin before they started dating him. They should have insisted on not only using a condom but in his being tested before they became intimate. We don't want to believe someone would knowingly pass on this disease but guys like this are out there. I can't say if I think the sentence is fair or not because I don't know how the law reads and how other sentences have been handed out.

If I was in a relationship and the person did not know they had the disease and passed it to me I would have to find a way to forgive them and move forward. If they knew and did not inform me so that I could make sure I was protected I would end the relationship regardless of if I loved the person or not. If the person tried to murder me I would not stay with them and this amounts to the same thing.

some of his relationships lasted years..one for 4 years..I think it is unrealistic for a couple to be dating and using a condom that long. Obviously looking back, all these women regret what they did...but I just can't imagine anyone in a monogamous relationshipI in her mind) for years, to be still using condoms after awhile. I am with you on the forgiving part, I think you have to forgive others to help yourself move on. I do agree with what you said here...most of these woman unfortunately were already broken up with him when they found out he had aids. They are promoting and sharing their stories so that other woman who see his picture can go get tested.

True I would not expect the use of condoms to continue in a relationship lasting that long. I would have insisted upon seeing the results but that is easier said than done. In a relationship your suppose to trust one another and it would not be a comfortable situation explaining to your partner that you trust them but only to a certain extent. Most people would opt to just assume the truth was being told to them.

If he knew that he had the virus and still had sex with them, then he should be tried as if he attempted to poison the women. It's the same thing.

I didn't see the Oprah story on this, but from the post above and the description people are giving, it sounds like the guy deserved the sentence. Bodily fluids can be considered a deadly weapon when the system deals with an assault. I don't see why the same can't be true in this situation, since his bodily fluids, accepted by these women under his false pretenses, were known by him to contain a deadly contagion.

That man deserves his punishment!!!! Unfortunately, all those women will have to suffer the rest of their lives. I strongly recommend that if any woman decides to have sex with anyone to PLEASE, PLEASE WEAR A CONDOM.....People living with AIDS and HIV do not have any physical characteristics that would indicate that they have the disease. Regular blood tests are also recommended.

What's the deal with older people refusing to use contraceptives to ensure murderers such as he cannot take advantage of the situation? It is an epidemic in Florida. Retired citizens have the highest rate of STD's in our area. Thanks Viagra!

Anyone who purposely injects another human being with poison has to be punished.

People must always protect themselves during a one-night-stand. But if you develop a relationship with someone who knows they are infected with a deadly virus and they don't tell you - it must be a crime.

What if the person was an out-of-state child molestor and a single mother left him alone with her children - would people blame the mother for not searching all 50 state sexual offender data bases? It's absurd.

I have a friend who's husband was involved with another man. While he was sleeping with her he was having the affair with and hiv infected man who died of aids. He knowingly exposed his wife to aids. In the mean time he tore down her self esteem and did all he could to destroy her and the marriage. When the custody of their children was decided and the terms of the divorce decided, the judge was greatly impacted by this man's decisions. I do not know if he is infected but my friend has had to go for testing.

It is a cruel cruel thing to knowingly do to someone else. It is bad enough so many suffer with this disease and many woman do not seek treatment during pregnancy and children are born into the world with it.

The man had a death sentence on his head and decided to share it with others. I think he should never be paroled.

A public and televised event of the cutting off of his genitals would serve well for future offenders.

I watched the show on Oprah as well, and one woman said that he did go to the doctors and she was waiting for him in the car and he came out of the office all "smiley" and said he tested negative. She believed him.....unfortunately! What he did was no better than someone who commits premeditated murder. He planned it knowing he would be giving the death sentence to someone else. Keep his sorry little butt in jail!

the ONLY way that cold be enough time is IF he does not receive any aids drugs while he is in prison. Otherwise, he should have been given 10 consecitive life sentences at least.

If you know you are HIV positive and you have unprotected sex anyway you should be charged with crime. That is just horrible.

He got off easy. I have no objection to death penalty in such cases. However 45 years is still not long enough. It should have been life without parole.

If one of these women dies from the disease, then it's murder to me. He was not only irresponsible but, very careless and cruel. You always tell someone if you have a deadly disease. So, the person can say yes or no, and know the reprecussions.

Wow, that's horrible. He will be dead by the time he finishes his sentence, so I don't see the point in pressing the issue of time. I realize its principal, but he's never getting out alive.
