Today on the south side of Chicago, Courtney Galiano age 21 gives dancing lessons to selective students at Hinton elementary school. Courtney appeared as a contestant on the 4th season of “So U Think U Can Dance”. She is a choreographer who specializes in contemporary and hip-hop and she’s also dancer for the New York Knicks basketball team. I had the pleasure of meeting Courtney and had fun dancing with her. Me and the other volunteers assisted the students in the dance routine Courtney put together. She started them out with a 15-minute workout, taught them a few break dancing moves and in minutes put together a simple routine, which I caught on to quickly. However, I also assisted a few students who were struggling with the dances and I must say most of them were well behaved. Before Courtney ended her mission of gratitude, she answered lots of questions from the students and other guests. She did a solo performance at the students request, did a final dance with the students-a repeat of the routine she taught them previously, and then she took pictures with the students, school staff, parents, the program director and the volunteers.
Although the students were suppose to be performing for WFLD Fox news, something came up and there was no TV time for the students like they were promises, but in the end we all had a good time and for me it was a great experience. I was able to use my talented skills as a dancer and a choreographer to help others! I love giving back to my community but I also love to dance!
