White Butterfly Ginger Lily

Last year, an acquaintance gave me some bulbs from where they were thinning out their flower bed.  I have an area that used to have two large bushes that I was trying to find plants for, so I took lots.  With the summer being so hot, the plants did okay, but not great.  However now I'm enjoying lots of beautiful white butterfly ginger lilies!


They were one of the first gingers recognized to be cold hardy, and do well here in the south.  I've discovered that they need lots of water, which may be another reason they didn't do that well here over the summer.

Their smell is amazing (very similar to jasmine), and they attract butterflies.  I'm hoping many more will come back next year and start filling that area in!

They are lovely! i'm really enjoying them, especially their beautiful fragrance!
wonderful... a lady I was seeing a coupl years ago had these in her yard. it gets COLD up here for Florida so most of the time they were covered/dormant... when they bloomed though they were just like these!

I'm in the Panhandle, so it gets cold here too - but they are thriving right now! From what I've read they should bloom until the first frost.

Thanks! I can see how they got their name - the flowers do look a lot like butterflies when they are fluttering in the breeze!

USDA Zones 7b-11. Ginger lily is a tropical plant. It tolerates an occasional light freeze and frost. A hard frost will kill it to the ground but it comes back quickly.
