1. New Orleans Saints - After dismantling the team that everyone, including myself, had pegged as the best and most complete in the NFL, the Saints shoot up to No. 1 in this week's rankings. Their offense had the vaunted Giants defense on their heels all game, while their surprisingly good defense kept Eli Manning and company frustrated and even forced an argument between the quarterback and his running back. Drew Brees came back to life and it seems that it's going to take an act of God for somebody to go to the Superdome and steal a victory. New Orleans goes to Miami next week, so we'll see how they do against the team that started the NFL's Wildcat movement.
Â
2. Denver Broncos - The haters were still out there on the Broncos, but an impressive Monday Night Football victory against the desperate San Diego Chargers has made believers out of a lot of NFL fans. The offense with Kyle Orton is improving every week and that defense continues to make key stops. Plus, Eddie Royal proved that he can still make plays in the return game, taking a punt and kick return to the house last night. They get a well-deserved bye next week before going to Baltimore and hosting Pittsburgh.
Â
3. Minnesota Vikings - Teams need to be a little lucky every now and then, and the Vikings needed all the luck they had to pull out a victory on Sunday against the Ravens that included a missed 44-yard field goal by Steven Haucshka as time expired. Their still undefeated and their offense looked explosive with Brett Favre and Adrian Peterson, but their D was torched in the second half as they gave up 21 points in the fourth quarter and relinquished a lead. They travel to Pittsburgh and Green Bay before their bye and their defense will need to step up their game if they're to remain undefeated.
Â
4. Indianapolis Colts - A bye week combined with impressive wins by other teams will push you down in the rankings, but don't be surprised to see the Colts crack back into the top three by next week. We all know the weapons like Peyton Manning and Reggie Wayne and we know they're going to put up points. They get to go to St. Louis this week to take on the Rams in what could be a blood bath. Hide the women and children.
Â
5. Atlanta Falcons - Their only loss came to the New England Patriots three weeks ago in Foxboro, which they were able to bring into their bye week. Since then, the Falcons have thrashed the 49ers, one of the most surprising teams in the League, in San Francisco and beat the surging Chicago Bears at home on national television. Matt Ryan has been incredibly efficient and their defense has been very good. They travel to Dallas and New Orleans over the next two weeks, two big tests for a team that's on the brink of becoming a favorite in the NFC.
