Penguin

Materials:
Worsted weight yarn - about 3 oz MC, small amount CB
Small amount yellow, scrap of black
Crochet Hook Size F (US)
Polyfill
Yarn needle
Gauge - 4 sc = inch, 4 sc rows = 1 inch.
Finished size – About 10 inches tall.
Notes: This pattern is worked in rows and rounds.
Do not join rounds unless indicated.
Mark the beginning of each round with a stitch marker or scrap of yarn.
Weave in loose ends as work progresses.
Work with MC yarn unless otherwise stated within the pattern.
Head (Make 2 Sections)
Rnd 1: (Right side) Ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. (6 sc)
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around. (12 sc)
Rnd 3: (Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc) repeat around. (18 sc)
Rnd 4: (Sc in each of next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc) repeat around. (24 sc)
Rnd 5: (Sc in each of next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc) repeat around. (30 sc)
Rnd 6: (Sc in each of next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc) repeat around. (36 sc)
Rnd 7 - 8: Sc in each sc around. At the end of rnd 8, join with a sl st in next sc,
fasten off.
Place the 2 head sections wrong sides together. With a length of MC yarn, sew
together over 30 sc, leaving remaining 6 sc opening for neck. Stuff head firmly.
Body
Notes: Body is worked in rows, not rounds and is started at the center front of
body and worked to center back of body then back seam is sewn together.
Beginning chain will be worked on both sides.
Row 1: With CB yarn and starting at center front of body, ch 12, sc in 2nd ch
from hook, sc in each of next 4 chs, hdc in each of next 3 chs, 2 dc in each of
next 2 chs, 5 dc in last ch. Continue row by working into the opposite side of
the starting chain, 2 dc in each of next 2 chs, hdc in each of next 3 chs, sc in
each of next 5 chs, ch 1, turn. (29 sts)
Row 2: Sc in each of next 12 sts, 2 dc in each of next 5 sts, sc in each of next
12 sts, change to MC yarn in last step of last sc, break off CB yarn, ch 1, turn. (34 sts)
Row 3: With MC yarn, sc in each of next 12 sts, 2 hdc in each of next 2 sts, 2
dc in each of next 6 sts, 2 hdc in each of next 2 sts, sc in each of next 12 sts, ch
1, turn. (44 sts)
Row 4: Sc in each of next 10sts, hdc in each of next 5 sts, 2 dc in each of next 3
sts, dc in each of next 8 sts, 2 dc in each of next 3 sts, hdc in each of next 5 sts,
sc in each of next 10 sts, ch 1, turn. (50 sts)
Rows 5 - 8: Sc in each st across, ch 1, turn.
Row 9: Sc in each of next 15 sc, (decrease 1 sc over next 2 sc) 3 times, sc in
each of next 8 sc (decrease 1 sc over next 2 sc) 3 times, Sc in each of next 15
sc, ch 1, turn. (44 sc)
Row 10: Sc in each of next 18 sc, ( decrease 1 sc over next 2 sc) 4 times, sc in
each of next 18 sc, ch 1, turn. (40 sc)
Row 11: Sc in each of next 14 sc, (decrease 1 sc over next 2 sc) 6 times, sc in
each of next 14 sc, ch 1, turn. (34 sc)
Row 12: Sc in each sc across, ch 1, turn.
Row 13: Sc in each of next 13 sc, (decrease 1 sc over next 2 sc)4 times, sc in
each of next 13 sc, leaving about a 12 inch length of yarn for sewing, fasten
off. (30 sc)
Match sides of row 13 and sew seam together. DO NOT STUFF BODY YET.
Neck Edging
Rnd 1: Join black yarn with a sl st in any row along neck opening, ch 1, sc in
same sp, work 23 more sc evenly around neck opening, join with a sl st in first
sc, ch 1, turn. (24 sc)
Rnd 2: (Sc in each of next 2 sc, decrease 1 sc over next 2 sc) repeat around.
Join with a sl st in next sc, ch 1 turn. (18 sc)
Rnd 3: (Sc in next sc, decrease 1 sc over next 2 sc) repeat around. Join with a sl
st in next sc, fasten off. (12 sc)
Stuff body firmly. Place head and body so that front and back sections are
aligned in the same direction. Sew together with a length of MC yarn, add more
stuffing to the neck area if necessary before closing.
Wings (Make 2)
Rnd 1: (Right side) Starting at bottom of wing, ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook.
(6 sc)
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around. (12 sc)
Rnd 3: (3 sc in next sc, sc in each of next 5 sc) repeat around. (16 sc)
Rnd 4: Sc in each sc around.
Rnd 5: Sc in next sc, 3 sc in next sc, sc in each of next 7 sc, 3 sc in next sc, sc
in next 6 sc. (20 sc)
Rnds 6 - 14: Sc in each sc around.
Rnd 15: (Decrease 1 sc over next 2 sc, sc in each of next 8 sc) repeat around.
(18 sc)
Rnd 16: Sc in each sc around.
Rnd 17: (Decrease 1 sc over next 2 sc, sc in each of next 7 sc) repeat around.
(16 sc)
Rnd 18: (Decrease 1 sc over next 2 sc, sc in each of next 6 sc) repeat around,
join with a sl st in next sc, leaving about a 12 inch length for sewing, fasten off.
(14 sc)
DO NOT STUFF WINGS. Flatten wings and with remaining length of yarn
sew the opening closed. Sew top of wings to sides of body over rnd 1 of neck
edging.
Beak
Rnd 1: With yellow yarn, ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. (6 sc)
Rnd 2: (Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc) repeat around. (9 sc)
Rnd 3: (Sc in each of next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc) repeat around. (12 sc)
Rnd 4: (Sc in each of next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc) repeat around. (15 sc)
Rnd 5: Sc in each sc around.
Rnd 6: (Sc in each of next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc) repeat around. (18 sc)
Rnd 7: Sc in each sc around, leaving about a 12 inch length for sewing, fasten
off.
Stuff beak and with remaining length of yarn sew to the center of face, with the
top of the beak placed slightly above the hole made by the starting chain. Add
more stuff to beak if necessary before closing.
With a length of black yarn embroider a line across the middle of the beak.
Eyes (make 2)
Row 1: With black yarn, ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook, change to white yarn
in last step of 6th sc, ch 1, turn. Break off black yarn. (6 sc)
Row 2: With white yarn, 2 sc in first sc, hdc in next sc, 2 hdc in each next 2 sc,
hdc in next sc, 2 sc in last sc. Fasten off.
Sew eyes over beak.
Feet (Make 4 sections)
Row 1: With yellow yarn and starting at back of foot ch 4, 2 sc in 2nd ch from
hook, sc in next ch, 2 sc in last ch, ch 1, turn. (5 sc)
Row 2: Sc in each sc across, ch 1, turn.
Row 3: 2 sc in first sc, sc in each next 3 sc, 2 sc in last sc, ch 1, turn. (7 sc)
Rows 4 - 7: Sc in each sc across, ch 1,turn.
Row 8: (This row make the toes) Sc and hdc in first sc, hdc in next sc, sc in
next sc, 3 hdc in next sc, sc in next sc, hdc in next sc, in last sc work hdc, sc
and sl st, fasten off. (12 sts)
With a length of yellow yarn, sew 2 feet sections together to form one foot.
Stuff firmly before closing.
Sew feet to bottom of body.
Weave in any remaining loose ends.
Done!!
