The Young Students’ Teacher
©2009 Robert C Burnham
- for Jennifer Lee, my sister Randi and all other folks called to teach our youngest students; the future of the world is in their classrooms -
You touch the little ones
With the way you care
You show them by your smile
That life is good and radiant
Sometimes they don’t seem
To notice you
And I know that must
Be so hard on your heart
But, do not falter;
Because – after-all, you are
Competing with the likes of
Spiderman
Wonder Woman
Superman and Santa Claus
The new puppy, the grouchy
Mommy and the dad who’s always
working late
But I did say ‘seems’, didn’t I?
Because, even when they don’t appear
To be listening – oh, they are
They are absorbing, so rapidly,
Each gesture you make each smile
You give and every lesson you offer
Remember, they are so young,
So little, And you -
You desire, the selfless role
You play.
You will not be there when their
Eyes light up as they finally understand
The Quadratic Equation or Bernoulli's Principle
Or see how ecstatic
They become when their essay of Great
American Literature is applauded and
Rewarded by scholarship
No, you will not, because, when they
Are yours, they are so young
But it is you who turned on their
Light of knowledge and nurtured
Their sense of discovery
They are but little students
And you give your all to them
And twenty years from now
They will remember,
Your gift to them – they will remember
You were their teacher.

I am tired......I am ready to go. Just when GOD's chooses .
I hope everything came out all right but then in these incidents..THEY DON'T!
I am mad !
now, if guns or knives had been there, one of us might not have been around for the discoveries.
I have met some pretty sad ones and leaves us wondering why they began to teach in the first place.
Anyway, this is a beautiful poem and reminder of the reasons I teach first grade. I still remember my first grade teacher. Your poem is filled with hope and is featured in The Poet's Circle.
Chris Brockman wrote one for me yesterday and it's also featured, if you want to have a look.
Thank you, darlin! HUgs
2. Some of my sister's students refer to me as "Ms. Brown's brother, the Writer" - I just love that.
Great Tribute Robert!
My sister just called me from her classroom to tell me there's been a county school shooting. The same county she teaches in. Here's the breaking article on MSN.com:
--------------------------
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - A 16-year-old student was shot to death in a high school Friday when a school resource officer tried to defend himself from attack, a school official confirmed to NBC News.
Teal Britton, spokeswoman for Horry School District, said the male student had asked to speak with the school's resource officer in his office and a fight ensued. The student attacked the officer with a knife, Britton said.
She said both struggled and to protect everyone's safety the officer resorted to using a weapon, Britton said. No one else witnessed the incident because it happened behind closed doors, Britton said

Love you
:)
I am a Mom of pre-schoolers and, though you've never taught them, I know the value of teachers!
Ok... couldn't find it, but it is something like this:
In 100 years it won't matter
What you had in your bank account
What your house looked like
What kind of car you drove
What will matter
Is the difference you made
In the life of a child.
I saw it on a greeting card and sent it to a friend of mine who was working as an underpaid, but highly successful, teacher in East St. Louis.
And I'm glad I enticed you to take out the old Meatloaf and give it a listen. LOL
We had no police then either, but at the same schools I went to, there are now.

So, does Randi, of course. She's a doll.
I may not be an official teacher, Robert but, I have two kids.
They both know all they do, because of me.
So, in a way, I'm a teacher too.
Don't forget that doll.
Thanks for posting to my group, Anythingwriting
