Well... the house still smells like skunk.

"Why?" You ask

This am shortly after 6, 2 shunks had a shooting contest in the basement. Hubby left the basement open and is currently in the doghouse.

So, cancel the day to spend the time descenting and airing the basement and house. Our neighbor just left a bit ago, saying his wife wont let him in till he is descented. Been spraying vinegar so now the house smells like that too. It is a delightfully 40 degrees out and so will be using the *not set up yet" guestroom to sleep tonight.

My eyes are still watering... got one skunk out and have a trap (a have a heart one) all set.

Ah the joys!

Worst is the wood absorbed so much... Mind you I like skunks! Just wish they liked us!

Wish I could help you out with your dilemma. Maybe you should consult a professional cleaning service. I hate the smell of skunk. Yuck.

White vinegar will break down the oils, just will take about a week because it is the floor beams...

I really feel for you since it is only 40 degrees outside. Maybe contacting a professional cleaning place could at least give you a hint at how to rid of the smell. In the meantime maybe the doghouse for both of you would be better than staying in the house. I know that was uncalled for. Just trying to lighten the situation!!!! Get on the phone!!!!

I hope you get rid of the smell as soon as possible It is really terrible. I hope you will write a post and let us know how you finally did get rid of it about how long it took and what you used. A selfish request. Ha!Ha! Sometimes we gat a skunk or two around our area.

oh my goodness....... maybe it is good we don't have basements in florida.... (they would be indoor swimming pools...lol).....i would leave him in the doghouse..... in the basement for a long long time......lol....

Never had the experience of having one enter my house but my Black lab had gotten skunked once. That was quite the chore to get rid of the smell. I don't envy you.

We had one that sprayed the dog in our driveway. The smell still got in the house enough to make me gag. I feel so bad for you. Hope the vinegar works.

Nancy, I think this will be taking time. As soon as I told the guy down at the feed store. Well they said weeks due to the wood. One of the guys cane over and all he could do is shake his head.

He brought over extra fans and some fencing. We can put the fencing over the doorway. It is that galvanized small square stuff. That way we can keep critters out while we air the basement.

Not good! Professionals could probably help, but likely would be expensive unless you have homeowners coverage for such problems. If you catch the skunk in the Have a Heart, what then?

Well, there's the trap and there is also cheezits leading out the door. Haven't been down there yet, but if it is in the trap, we will take outside and release it into the woods. LOL surrounded by woods here.

The first one followed me outside as long as I kept tossing cheezits a few feet in front of it. They will be hybernating soon, so once the basement is clear THE DOOR WILL BE CLOSED. The basement is under the old part of the house and where this lil guy is, is under the new part which is less than a foot from the ground to the beams. A child might fit, but an adult...

OMG, I feel so bad for you. Aside from the white vinegar pure ammonia might help to kill the odor. No wonder hubby is in the dog house. I think you should let him out though, he needs to enjoy the lovely aroma with you inside! LOL

LOL!!!! Maybe... I went and got nature's miracle and a few other things that were suggested. Even in the store I could still smell it.

We had gotten new insulation, so one of the positives is the old insulation has been removed. Not gagging this am but can still smell it.

I'm glad it's better this morning. I can remember my grandmother giving one of her dogs a bath in tomato juice and then dousing him with lemon juice. I don't think the poor old dog ever did get to come back in the house after his run in with the skunk. Once you get a whiff of that odor you never forget it!

I am really trying not to laugh, I know it is not funny, but I can't help myself.
I can't imagine how bad it smells in there! oh my goodness...
my hubby wouldn't even be able to be in the doghouse for this one! he best be down the block in someones shed! Lol...
