Capitalism

Folks, I have no problem with capitalism. My problem is with unfettered capitalism and capitalism without a conscience. Such as the bankers on wallstreet who would rather take the profits as bonuses rather than give them to the rightfull recipients the shareholders and investors. What do you think?

I have lots of problems with capitalism, but I still like the idea of capitalism. I think I've really been put off by greedy capitalists--as you say those without a conscience.

I think there needs to be a balance and as of late the scales have been tipped too far on the side of capitalism, thus the greedy capitalists have been running around unchecked.

Would you all say the Goldman's announcement of 2.5 Billion yes, Billion profits in the last quarter was fair and balanced or just plain greed, especially after taxpayers bailed out the company that would take down the world and all the world's mothers too.
There should be ''no'' profits, until all taxpayer money is paid back, in full, with interest. About 90 % interest. Then we can sit back and watch ''them'' bitch about high interest rates.

I say they are fair because they where earned, i would imagine, from honest trading. As for what they will do with them will decide if Goldman works from greed or fairness. Let us all wait and watch...

The great invisible hand of capitalist theory is meant to give weight to the consumer. When we speak of supply and demand, the seller supplies/the consumer demands. Thus the rational business model follows the demands of the market and everything evens out, we all prosper. We do not and have never had that kind of capitalism on a national level. Thus, we have no way of knowing if the theory even can work beyond a simple market scenario.

What is it called or would you say is the phenomena of so much money being tossed to and fro by the mega banks which seems to tower over the world of the consumer. if one where to add up the money generated with stock and investment banking and compare it to the money in manufacturing and farming I would say that investment banking would out number the latter by a ration of 2 to one, hence a pyramid scheme of a sort.

No, I have made my money and realized that it was as empty as the paper it was printed on. If you where to read my post, again I need to say stop seeing what you want to see, you would realize that I said "Goldman is due the profit if they earned it". Why do humans only see what they have trained themselves to see or hear for that matter?

Yes,there are a lot of greedy people on Wall Street. Unfortunately,that's all you ever hear about. On the surface,it would seem that all you have to do is enforce,or strengthen laws that would make these predators more accountable to the investors and the shareholders. But in an area where money and politics are closely interlinked,it would seem that getting ANYONE to enact or enforce such laws would be like spitting against the wind. ...if the rich man has EARNED his money, he knows how to earn it and will be rich again. If he inherited it, he will have no idea how to get it back. That is the very reason lottery winners are returned to poverty.

Depends how that rich man earned the money and what he does with it. I don't think corporate greed is a good example of earning anything. Not off the backs of others, that is but being a slave owner again.
Linda, How can 1 rich man ''EARN'' millions of dollars all by himself?? Most rich men have someone else helping him earn ''his'' money. Either someone ''making'' his product, or someone ''buying'' his product or service. In fact, I can't think of a single millionaire or billionaire who made all his money, all by himself!!

It, I think, is an impossibility. To be completely void of human interreation and it is impossible to make money.
Artists and musicians are the closest thing to doing so though.

A very sane article, there is a very thin line between reasonable profit, excessive compensation and social responsibility. How can the CEO of United Health Care take home $57,000 a day while funding opposition for universal healthcare in the richest nation in the world?

Extreme competition is the best form of capitalism.
Unless the whole industry colludes to fix prices, like the insurance industry, and the oil, and banking industries.
