TEN LESSONS LEARNED FROM ARTHUR LEE (1945-2006)
Arthur Lee's career still offers aspiring musicians valuable lessons
in mistakes to avoid and habits to
embrace.
On the one hand:
1) At the height of Love's fame Lee refused to tour because he felt
uncomfortable leaving his home base.
2) He didn't adequately acknowledge the contributions of his sidemen.
3) He was aggressively rude to reporters and media people and alienated them.
4) He dubiously sought to claim credit as an originator in matters of
mere style.
5) Having originated and produced a masterpiece, Forever Changes, he
abandoned his approach and produced weak and derivative work for many
years.
On the other hand:
1) After his initial success he negotiated a better contract.
2) He was a perfectionist in the studio and took pains over his work.
3) He worked on Forever Changes as if it were to be his last album.
4) He wrote about his time and place with candor and insight.
5) Late in his career he connected with people who appreciated and
enhanced his talent.

450. CONTROVERSIES IN POPULAR CULTURE
TOAST
Toast features in one of the saddest stories I know.
In his autobiography, comedian and future activist Dick Gregory points
out that he would go to the Jewish grocer for bread and the grocer,
named Mr. Ben, would always give them a stale loaf since they bought
on credit.
When young Dick brought the bread home, his mother would always say,
"Well, ain't that nice! How did Mr. Ben know we was fixin' to make toast?"
