Yes Spartan, I find it pretty awe inspiring as well. Eric Johnson was heavily influenced by Hendrix and does a number of Jimi tunes, including Are You Experienced with the backward echo - which is very difficult to work with.
No nylon strings here. Though I own a couple guitars, my favorite is still my 29+ year old steel stringed Yari Alvarez. The sound just gets sweeter with age. I'm a finger picker along the style of James Taylor.
