"It is better to remain alone than to be in bad company "
a french saying
The psychiatrist scott peck discusses the idea of evil in "the road less travelled"
Does evil exist and if so how does one define it in objective terms, unrelated to religion?
Religion defines evil as what is not moral behavior according to the code of conduct that defines a good person
nonreligious terms fail to define evil but i think that most of us can agree
when we read the daily newspaper or am unfortunate to encounter callous
destructive behavior , it seems that evil exists just as we can clearly feel
at times the fortunate ways of grace surrounding us with a protective shield.
Evil, scott peck argues in "the road less travelled" is that inability to be
conscious, and i would suggest to support the argument by saying
it is a stubborn refusal to not only do good but to do good with those
who desparately need to have good deeds done to them.
Evil is that ability to walk away from those in need
evil is the ability to sleep at ease when others suffer
evil is the ability to deny another person's pain
evil is the ability to turn your back when someone who has treated you with kindness turns to you
evil is the ability to turn your back and pretend you just dont see
What can be done to combat evil?
according to the mental health expert Scott Peck it is the work to be done
in therpay for exemple or during a spiritual journey which takes you
from the unconscious to the conscious and makes you a more aware person
a more conscious person aware of how your deeds influence others.
It seems that role playing has the world divided at times to those who run over others without looking back
who hit and run
and those who continually roll under those wheels,
getting injured time after time
only to fall again
A growing awareness , argues Scott Peck, puts an end to the vicious cycle
and ends the martyr's chosen life style as it ends the torturer's life style
running over people with his or her vehicle.
An ability to look inward, to inspect and examine one's deeds brings
that grace, that ability to admit faults and to feel a wrong doing
take responsibility and not repeat it .
Will evil ever leave the earth ?
Considering the fact that mental health workers are expensive and that
those who seek help in correcting their wrongful ways are probobly the ones
have already gone the half way, that are aware they have something to repair,
one wonders what are the chances of those evil to find healing and grace
and ability to be aware of their evil wrong doings?
The answer given by society is either the electrical chair, jail,
for those breaking the law
but to those only breaking the heart there is no punishment
there used to be the social pressure defined as "shame" but too often
those who have been wronged were blamed
the witches burned at the stake were often nonconformists
cat loving strangers while the true evil doers continued with their deeds
with the seal of approval of society
Many societies rule by force
many people admire physical strength, the ability to rule over feelings,
the capacity to deny others , to play with their feelings, to torture those
who are naive to believe that good will come out of evil deeds
however let it be clear
those who present themselves as other than who they are
who pretend to love while their true nature is hateful
who pretend to care while their true nature is to ignore
who pretend to befriend while they have no clue as to what a friend is or does
those who deceive , deny define evil in a new way
an evil person is unaware of his or her deeds while having the full potential
to be aware
an evil person does not bother to do the work necessary to becoming a good person
for he or she seeks the fruit of love without having cared for the tree
the evil person takes from the tree of knowledge a bite of the apple
and spits it out
The good perso, in contrast to the evil one , eats the apple and lives to regret his or her deed
and spends the rest of his or her life compensating for the injury done
thinking about what had happened
and making amends.

you are probobly right, that the last sentence is the essential statement!
Justice does require self-reflection. Hildegarde of Bingen called it "speculative knowledge," which at the time meant "mirror knowledge."
However, wallowing in guilt for the rest of one's life is unproductive. Learn from the lesson and move on and don't make the same mistake again. Let go of the past. Renew your spirit in meditation.
i do believe that sitting ducks is also not a viable option
but there we differ
i still think of the way the british prime minister tried to appease hitler
those bad guys dont just go away, they unfortunattely need to be put away
as for the losses and suffering and pain and death well, that is the reality of a very cruel world where power speaks while meditations and poems are ignored
there is a saying in israel
"when the cannons fire, the muses are silent"
it is sad indeed but i dont think teaching the taliban to grow coffee would grow
as for the second advice ,true but guilt is not necessary bad if it teaches you to feel the pain again and again till you get tired of the pain and move on
it is definitely a process
as for making mistakes,
we repeat them till we finally learn
and i do believe that connects to the first part
no one wants the middle east to turn out like europe in the 1940's
millions massacred and for what?
so sometimes you need to use preventive measures
anyway
i did not mean to talk of politics
thanks alison
your wisdom and knowledge never fails to amaze you
why are you not teaching i ask myself but then you are , you most certainly are !!
i adore you !!
Interesting... it is not because the good person didn't take the apple...they did... a good point. They regret it... their heart feels it...
lets hope we live and learn too , i would like to say that one day when i reach a level of satisfaction that yes i did it
