Some people - erroneously of course - suggest that I have quite enough books.
But one can never have enough - or too many, even!
This was a very good books weekend. Not only did my sister show up for turkey with not one but two boxes of new books for me, we also made a trip to the book store on Old Fort Road - not far from the Harbour.
Actually, I was there twice this weekend. On Saturday, when I was out to do the grocery shopping for Thanksgiving dinner, I noticed a sign saying that it was closing and everything was 1/2 price. No WAY I could not stop, right?!
I bought several books then - mostly things to do with First Nations Canadians. For school, honest, Honey!
We went back on Sunday - this time, with Ross -and I got even more. Ross is a lot better than I am at finding particular titles of interest. He found the Emily Ferguson biography and several others. I was the one that spotted the Janey Canuck in the West one though! We found bunches of Nellie McClung books too. She's another of the Famous Five (like Emily Ferguson Murphy aka Janey Canuck).
Most of the books we bought this time were published in the early 1900s.
I am really excited about owning them - and reading them - and hopefully someday doing critical editions of Famous Five authors literary works. Don't quite know how that focus fits into my thesis (okay, it doesn't!) - but it is an area I am really excited about working in, so will just have to make it fit somewhere, that's all.
I am doing a paper for my core course that will contribute to my eventual critical edition(s) - looking at the depiction of Aboriginal peoples in the books vs the political/legal events of that time - and even though it requires a whole lot of new learning, as I really haven't got much background in dealing with legal/political theory or history, I'm excited about it. Now to figure out what to focus on for the paper for my citizenship course!
