They say games are won and lost in the 4th quarter.
For the Dolphins and the Jets on the October 12 edition of Monday Night Football, the word "lose" in any tense or form wasn't in their vocabulary.
Both teams decided to show off all of their weapons as the firewoks came out for a national television audience to see, and it was apparent halfway through that incredible 4th quarter that the last team to have the ball was probably going to come away victorious.
The team to have the last real possession was Miami, and they made it count as they scored a touchdown with six seconds remaining to upset the Jets, 31-27.
All of the talk heading into the game was focused on how Miami could possibly move the ball against a very talented Jet defense. Questions surrounded whether the Dolphins would be able to run their vaunted Wildcat offense against an extremely aggressive New York defensive group that had been rock solid all year.
The end result was a 4th quarter shootout that saw five lead changes in the final frame alone, the last change coming when running back Ronnie Brown punched it in from two yards out to put the Dolphins ahead for good.
Entering the 4th trailing 13-10, Miami scored less than a minute in when Chad Henne found Anthony Fasano from a couple yards out. The Jets quickly answered when newcomer Braylon Edwards made a ridiculous catch at the one yard line, setting up a Thomas Jones TD run to give New York a 20-17 lead.
Back came Miami with a 53-yard strike from Henne to Ted Ginn, Jr. to put the Dolphins back on top 24-20, but the Jets weren't done yet as a pass interference call gave New York the ball at the 3 and Jones puched in his second TD of the quarter, putting them back on top 27-24.
But Henne led the Dolphins back one more time, resulting in Brown's winning touchdown in the final seconds.
It was about as good as you could ask for in a football game, whether you're a fan of one of the teams or just someone who loves football. The first three quarters may not have been great or out of the ordinary, but it's not how you start, it's how you finish.
Was it one of the greatest Monday Night Football games ever? It's tough to say.
Was it one of the greatest quarters ever in a Monday Night Footbal game?
Absolutely.
