Do you guys remember Nia Vardalos? She was in the hit movie several years ago called My Big Fat Greek Wedding. She recently did a couple of movies, and now one of them, My Life in Ruins has come out on DVD. It's a very charming movie.
The scenery of Greece alone is remarkable. Nia plays Georgia, a woman who is a tour guide, but wants to get back to teaching in universities. She knows everything about the history of ancient times, but is sort of a fact relater, not a people relater. She is given the worst tour bus, and the most motley crue of tourists to handle.
This movie isn't a normal romantic comedy. I don't even feel comfortable calling it a romantic comedy. If one is waiting for a laugh riot, this isn't your movie. I want to say it's more real, although we all know movies are rarely true to life.
Supporting actors like Rachel Dratch and Richard Dreyfuss bring a welcome zing to the movie. And I felt good about how they portrayed someone who somet would say had a "lowly" job. What's wrong with having a "lowly" job if one likes it? Basically the movie was about how it's okay to be you, whoever you are.
It is rated PG-13, and there is no nudity. Some innuendo and some cursing is what makes it PG-13.
