Mix a little of the baking soda with a spoonful of vinegar. If it bubbles right away, its still effective. If it doesn't bubble, then it is no longer useful.

Actually baking soda is supposed to be the bicarbonete. If it degrades to the carbonate, it will still give that reaction.

even if it doesn't bubble, you can still use it in the bathtub to soften the water, or as toothpaste, or even to clean the counter tops

It might not be good enough to cook with, but there's some other idea's already posted that it will work well for. If you make a paste with it with water, it will work just like "soft scrub" for you sinks and tub.

For pastery, if it degrades to the carbonate, you may add a little lime or lemon juice to the batter. I added too much juice and it bubbled way too much. It would require experimentation.

My entire family just loves chemistry. I used to experiment a lot. (Wanna know how to turn fertilizer into a bomb?. How about making nitroglycerine from cooking oil?--Not gonna tell yah!!!)

AND if you do dispose of it, dump it down your sink and tub drains because it cleans as it
rinses away!

Yes Dennis you are right! Nothing nicer than clean drains! Clean anything actually. Baking soda is a great item!

I have n o idea...I don't think I've ever lookeda t the exp date so I'm sure I've used it for baking long past the dates!
