Listen folks... The PRESIDENT of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA won the NOBEL PEACE PRIZE!!!

October 09, 2009 07:12 PM EDT

And you're UNHAPPY that he was awarded this honor?!?  YOUR response is to belittle, ridicule and TRASH it? REALLY?!? SERIOUSLY?!?

SHAME!  SHAME on th' lot of ye!

Well, I say... Barack H. Obama, President of the United States of America has been awarded the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize. This is a proud day for him, for his oft-expressed ideals and goals, AND for the United States of America.

Why did the Committee select a man who had been President only twelve days at the close of nominations? Why did they even consider him?

I believe they may have seen the same hope we who were intelligent enough to vote FOR him did. Perhaps they recognize diplomacy as superior to bombast, belligerence and war. Maybe, just MAYbe, they believe that talking to leaders of other countries, even those who insult you and make absurd statements, beats killing tens of thousands of their citizens to make your point. Maybe, just MAYbe, they believed that his expressed willingness to speak with your allies as equals, and listen respectfully even when you disagree (and not give their leaders insulting nicknames), beats going off alone and demanding support, whether you have reason to expect it or not.

I doubt very much their deliberations considered only his pre-election, pre-inauguration rhetoric. Even though the nominations were closed February 1st, I'd bet this had more to do with actions since, with expectations still held, and with a desire to encourage his behavior on the part of leaders in the world.

Listen folks, I say again, in case you didn't understand the first time... the PRESIDENT of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA won the NOBEL PEACE PRIZE!!!

When I heard this on my way to work (at about 5:15 this morning, I cheered and bounced like a kid at a football game his team just won. The PRESIDENT of the USA WON a NOBEL PEACE PRIZE!!! How EXCELLENT is THAT?!? How can we not be proud? Then I thought, "I've gotta get out of work by 3:00 this afternoon. I've gotta hear Hannity. There HAS to a point at which eve HE says, "Good for you, Mr' President!" doesn't there?"

Turns out, it's apparently very easy to not be proud, and that we have definitely NOT reached any such point with Ol' Sean. He was so angry, so frustrated, so infuriated, so filled with vitriol and hate, so downright MAD that he was just stammering. I could "see" the flecks of froth flying at the mike. I couldn't turn it off. He was near-apopoleptic. His only recourse was ridicule, and it was the lowest, basest, most vile ridicule he could find. The man (and his fans) were just terror-ridden that this might actually MEAN something. And y'know what? It just might could.

Indeed, we should ALL be proud. He stands in great company (Mr. Arafat aside), I'm proud for him and for us!

Its sick how people are hating on Obama. Its a disgrace how some people act...
How can we teach our children respect for anyone when you have grown ups acting more childish then children.????
Chuck L. Oct 9, 2009, 7:15pm EDT
Question of th' day, my dear... th' question of th' day.

Dennis Gilman Oct 10, 2009, 12:34am EDT
I was surprized that they chose him, but the reaction of disappointment that I am reading from so many US citizens is puzzling.
Charles Temm JR Oct 10, 2009, 11:52am EDT
Its more puzzlement than disappointment but at least Dennis you are thinking about the whys of their reaction rather than jumping to conclusions.
Angel sent from God Secret Sisters Oct 10, 2009, 11:57am EDT
If it was Bush all the Republicans would be jumping for joy....Now that is a man that would not deserve the Noble Peace Prize..

racial profiling.

nothing to do with the PERSON, it is all spin.

the reaction partially is because a lot of people don't like him sure... but TWELVE DAYS... you used to have to WORK a lifetime to get this honor, actually HELP others and make a CAREER of it, now all you have to do is be 'black' and get elected.
I didn't vote for Obama, but I didn't vote against HIM either, I voted against the pandering splinter group accessed democrats that I was a member of for a quarter of a century.

I'm rooting FOR Obama, but you have to admit that TWELVE days ain't a career, and certainly NOT the 'Mother Theresa' standard of this award.

Calling me a racist, or a hater make you feel justified? go ahead.

Doc, in the middle, holding on... Curmudgeon esq. Oct 9, 2009, 7:29pm EDT
also this award is not given for 'hope', it is given for accomplishment.
Aunt Boni H. Oct 9, 2009, 7:35pm EDT
and yoy don't think he's made ny "accomplishments"?
here have you been sunc January 20th?
Chuck L. Oct 9, 2009, 7:43pm EDT
"Calling me a racist, or a hater make you feel justified? go ahead."
I didn't call you ANYthing.

"also this award is not given for 'hope', it is given for accomplishment."
Wrote the rules didja? Apparently... you're wrong, for now.
Chuck L. Oct 9, 2009, 7:47pm EDT
"...you used to have to WORK a lifetime to get this honor, actually HELP others and make a CAREER of it, now all you have to do is be 'black' and get elected."

I don't get the quotes around black, and, frankly, I don't get this sentence at ALL. So NOW I'll call you something. Lemmee think... what'll fit?

Oh, I know... how 'bout ignorant? That oughta cover pretty much deverything up there.
Doc, in the middle, holding on... Curmudgeon esq. Oct 9, 2009, 7:55pm EDT
Ignorant? because I resist the spin that comes down over this? OK fine.. if that makes you happy and name calling always seems to, then fine.
Elizabeth R. Oct 9, 2009, 8:23pm EDT
Since, as I understand, this award is for life accomplishments this proves they were watching him before he became President Obama.

Congratulations, Mr. President!
Chuck L. Oct 9, 2009, 9:45pm EDT
"Ignorant? because I resist the spin that comes down over this?"

No. Because your comment is filled with ignorance.
Doc, in the middle, holding on... Curmudgeon esq. Oct 9, 2009, 9:49pm EDT
awards for being instead of DOING shouldn't be this way, nothing ignorant about that
Doc, in the middle, holding on... Curmudgeon esq. Oct 9, 2009, 9:51pm EDT

Elizabeth
go look up the actual voting record of Mr. Obama, it isn't that much. He seems sincere in his wanting to help but until he got the presidency he was not a person of excellence. Good college record yes, but hardly Nobel caliber.
Wyoming Catt (The Militant Midget) Oct 9, 2009, 10:15pm EDT
Doc, let's imagine for a moment that his election is the genesis for the NPP:

Can you not imagine the AWE to which the rest of the world viewed the election? All knew that the likelihood of a non-white being elected were slim and none. How many times has this nation come together to reject its own world-renown legacy of racial intolerance? Only South Africa had it worse.

If it was indeed this election that garnered him the award, then I say it was awarded to us all, the intellectual world's way of saying "Well done, children."

"We saw our country tear itself apart in terrible conflict... The time for healing of wounds has come... Never, never again will this beautiful land experience the oppression of one by another."
Nelson Mandela
Allen H. Oct 10, 2009, 1:40am EDT
I'm a little uneasy about awarding a peace prize to someone when he as an individual hasn't actually done anything yet apart from winning the election. It is supposed to recognise sacrifice and achievement, not popularity - in my judgement it was given too soon; 12 days into the job!!
I would accept the Nobel Peace Prize being awarded to the United States for showing the maturity as a nation to elect a black man as their President.
I bet that is what the Nobel selection committee had in mind, and if so, pat yourselves on the back! A lot of people all around the World admired the USA on election day!
Joyce ("Site Cheshire Kitteh") L. Oct 10, 2009, 3:43am EDT
Way to go, Catt! Wyoming gotz real smart felines!!
Doc, in the middle, holding on... Curmudgeon esq. Oct 10, 2009, 9:37am EDT
Actually if taken literally both Balkan Europe and Japan have just as bad and much longer history of racial and ethnic intolerance than we do, THEY just don't have such a huge media reminding them constantly.
Not to say ours isn't bad, just to say that it is a common human failing.
Doc, in the middle, holding on... Curmudgeon esq. Oct 10, 2009, 9:38am EDT
I'm with Allen here... "I would accept the Nobel Peace Prize being awarded to the United States for showing the maturity as a nation to elect a black man as their President."
Wyoming Catt (The Militant Midget) Oct 10, 2009, 10:28am EDT
Aw, fudge, Allen, Doc! Can't we just be happy for the man for once? Why must every little thing that has to do with him be torn apart, dissected and found wanting? Under a microscope as none were before, kinda like Vanessa Williams.

Feh. Never mind. As Robert Lowry, Joe Wilson, Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh would say, "Screw the proprieties!!"

Hi, Joyce!
Doc, in the middle, holding on... Curmudgeon esq. Oct 10, 2009, 10:40am EDT
Catt;

I think some of our point here is that all this happy happy joy joy may not be in the interest of the country. Far as being under a microscope the second term of old dumbass was pretty well scrutinized...
Wyoming Catt (The Militant Midget) Oct 10, 2009, 1:50pm EDT
I would disagree with the view that Bush's last term and Obama's current one share similarities. Perhaps a miniscule amount, but the differences far outweigh those, and we're not talking skin color, either.

We shall agree to disagree until we're on a proper post for such an argument.

"Happy Happy Joy Joy".. I destest Ren & Stimpy.
I much prefer Balki's "The Myposian Dance Of Joy".
Doc, in the middle, holding on... Curmudgeon esq. Oct 10, 2009, 2:01pm EDT
dear Catt;
my point being that the MEDIA chewed dubya and rightly so with ATTITUDE far more in way to "torn apart, dissected and found wanting"....

Obama has gotten kind of a free ride, which given how screwed up things are I don't really mind, but lets cal it what it is.

by the way is it a "hundred days" of Democratic majority yet? that never got brought up and THAT nobody can blame Obama for.

right starts wars, spends our money, left starts programs that make jobs for the emerging from college children of their supporters claiming to help the people they often have requirement inflated out of the jobs to start with.
Never mind skin color, I don't give a damn about that though I find aspects of Obama's background kind of comical, there isn't a COAT OF PAINTS DIFFERENCE between the two major parties.
that said we can continue this elsewhere if you like.
Doc, in the middle, holding on... Curmudgeon esq. Oct 10, 2009, 2:01pm EDT
except.. "Happy Happy Joy Joy" I quote from Sandra Bullock in some old Arnie movie.

There's a whole speech that went with the award. Mebbe somebody has a link to the transcript?

Oh, right... Not what you meant, is it?

Well, I just got home from evilly plotting to destroy the country... by providing SE Michigan with electricity and keeping within compliance with environmental regulations...

So, we're even.
Annmarie B. Oct 9, 2009, 10:47pm EDT
Chuck, what did he do to deserve it??? Just wondering.
Wyoming Catt (The Militant Midget) Oct 9, 2009, 10:54pm EDT
"Obama has as President created a new climate in international politics," the committee stated. "Multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other international institutions can play.

"Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future."

Chuck,
Do you, by chance have any photos, maybe a video of you jumping up and down, hollering like a little kid? Gimme!

My personal opinion - he hasn't been in office long enough.

We see things differently. The folks who've been doing this for generations thought he deserved it, and I'm pleased to go along with them.

Sorry... no video.

It appears at times it is more about hate for the man than for the politics. Perhaps his nomination for the Nobel Prize was a bit quick but the decision was made 9 months into his presidency and I think it is well deserved.

The award of this honor to President Obama is more about encouraging a cause than it is about the achievements of this one man. And that's OK. President Obama himself is so humble he said he didn't think he deserved it.
Charles M. Oct 9, 2009, 8:17pm EDT

To the rest of the world the simple act of replacing the bellicose war-mongering attitude of the previous 8 years with one of talk and negotiate rather than invade first might be sufficient to award such a prize. Remember that the US still tends to drive international policy. Perhaps not the hegemony, Pax-Americana, that some invisioned but still a leader of policy.
Chuck L. Oct 9, 2009, 8:49pm EDT
Certainly might be part of it.
Bruce K. Oct 9, 2009, 8:51pm EDT
Maybe, but then they should have directed the Nobel Prize to the American people, and donated the money to the US Treasury.

I'm kind of neutral about it, but I have to commend you Chuck on actually writing something to go with this. Every article I have clicked on so far has just stated what happened or pointed to a news story or a link.

I think it is kind of funny and awkward, a kind of symbolic gesture to America, but directed at one man who is having some trouble leading all Americans ... like this is going to help?

I don't know, I hope it does.

I really wonder about the politics really, this is obviously a symbolic statement, so what for?

The Nobel prize is cheapened.

It is almost as if the Nobel committee is exorting President Obama not to attack Afghanistan? It's just funny and kind of weird.
Lee P. Oct 9, 2009, 10:20pm EDT
LOL. I'm amazed that someone else also thought this. I don't think he can be bought .... maybe he'll quit his day job now that he's over ten million dollars richer. LOL

Thanks Chuck. For what it's worth, my Republican Governor, Tim Pawlenty, erstwhile candidate for the GOP presidential nomination, whom I seldom agree with said something today that gave me a reason to afford him some grudging respect. Not gushing, by any means, but he said, "Somebody wins the Nobel Prize, you say 'congratulations'."

That's right, Tim, even if you might not have made the same award, what you say is "congratulations". Shimon Peres, said "congratulations". At least my Republican governor has the grace to act as though he understands that when America's leader is honored, America is honored, unlike many cynical, self-absorbed liberals who can't seem to understand the power that a thing like this can carry as a force for peace, and can't seem to get over themselves enough to stop trying to subtract from a potential, symbolic force for peace, and say, "congratulations". . . and leave it at that.
Joyce ("Site Cheshire Kitteh") L. Oct 10, 2009, 3:52am EDT

I still seem to be missing where anyone mentions the names of worthy GOP candidates .................could it BE they are too busy gnashing their teeth to be thinking clearly? Hmmmmm.
Anyone that thinks President Obama wanted to wake up to THIS in the midst of everything that he is embroiled in is kidding themself. That being said he did a very respectable job of being honored and humbled in his acceptance statement.
Now be sure to spend even MORE time on second guessing his decision about donating the cash award to charity.............and then ask yourself how many of YOU or your favorite FOX talking heads have made their donation to help get some much needed health services to your neighbors!

Congratulations President Obama.

His acceptance speech was very humble. He's now a little over $10,000,000 richer. He just might quit his day job if people don't start being nicer to him. Maybe he'll spread the wealth around (Not).

I get the impression you don't like Sean Hannity. LOL

He did say the money would be donated to charity.
Lee P. Oct 9, 2009, 10:29pm EDT
I missed that part, I think that's a very nice thing to do.
Wil B. Oct 9, 2009, 10:41pm EDT
You also missed the part where it's not ten million dollars.
Lee P. Oct 9, 2009, 10:51pm EDT

I was going by the prize amounts given out in the past. I Goggled past peace price amounts and it was ten million dollars last year.

Annmarie B. Oct 10, 2009, 12:04am EDT
Maybe the prize money was lower because of what he didn't do??????
Wil B. Oct 10, 2009, 12:05am EDT
No it wasn't. It wasn't ten million dollars last year. It wasn't ten million dollars this year. It's never been ten million dollars.
James T. Oct 10, 2009, 12:31am EDT
The cash award is 1.5 million and has been that for a few years. So it was not 10 or any other number. Geez!!!

:O\
Lonnie F. Oct 10, 2009, 2:23am EDT
The money will be donated to charity?
Hi--may name is Charity . When may I expect my check.???
Just kiddin---- Lonnie Fowler
Lee P. Oct 10, 2009, 8:48am EDT
Awwww, you are correct. I went back and read the chart where I obtained my facts and the ten million listed was in Sweedish kronor (SEK), which converts to about one million six hundred thousand in U.S. dollars. I guess our President will just have to keep working for peace in the world. You just can’t retire on a million and a half anymore. He would have to give up his date night vacations and start shopping at Wal Mart like I do. Wouldn’t it be nice to see our President walking down the aisle of Wal Mart looking for a cheap box of Fruit Loops. Or maybe not. We would know that our economy was really bad if that happened.

Congratulations President Obama.
Wyoming Catt (The Militant Midget) Oct 10, 2009, 10:41am EDT
Nice, Lee. It takes a steady ego to admit one is wrong. You and I are on opposite sides of this fight, but thank you for the retraction.

Oh my, what an interesting reply. Don't know what crazies you are refering to or what side you are on. Didn't even know there were sides. I happen to like our President and waiting to see how he is going to unravel this mess we are in and knit it back into something that resembles stability is very interesting. I guess I'm on the side of the United States of America. Thanks for the kind words.
Wyoming Catt (The Militant Midget) Oct 10, 2009, 1:14pm EDT
Oh, yeah.. there are definitely 'sides'. Neutral is a perfectly acceptable position, too. Maybe the best one.

I took this, "Maybe he'll spread the wealth around (Not)." to mean something you obviously did not intend it to.

Since this is the case, the "other crazies" I refer to is clearly myself. My faux pas aside, you still seem a very nice person.

Doc, in the middle, holding on... Curmudgeon esq. Oct 9, 2009, 7:29pm EDT
also this award is not given for 'hope', it is given for accomplishment.

From the Nobel site:
According to Nobel's will, the Peace Prize should be awarded "to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses."

The committee has often awarded the prize to those who are PROMOTING the cause of peace, even if those efforts have not yet fully blossomed. Using your definition, the Dalai Lama did NOT deserve his prize either, because heck, Tibet is STILL under Chinese control (in fact, the Chinese government bitched and moaned about the award about as much as the Republicans are now bitching about Obama!) The Dalai Lama is an inspirational figure that represents peace, but how many peace treaties has he personally negotiated?

Nice article, Chuck. And a big congrats to President Obama, to the American people in general, and especially to those who've supported him, who voted for him, and who share his vision.

As for Hannity and the other haters, seriously, what else would you expect? Rousing the rabble is how they put food on the table. But not everyone one the right is like that. Andrew Sullivan led his post about it with the following statement:
If any person has done more to advance some measure of calm, reason and peace in this troubled word lately, it's president Obama.
And Huckabee said any outcry from those on the right would "sound like right-wing whining", which I think is being pretty generous in many cases.

I really don't know what to think of it
I don't know much, if anything, really about politics, and know even less about the Nobel Peace Prize...but I did think it was something they had to work many years before being awarded.
Sheryl L. Oct 10, 2009, 1:38am EDT
I think the prize as much about Ideal as it is about accomplishment. Maybe this is the worlds way of telling us that we are finally heading in a better direction. That of working with others rather than trying to dictate to them.

At first, I thought how wonderful that they recognized his hope for the US and for the World.
Then, I realized that maybe it is about FINALLY, those big-headed Americans are looking to a kinder, gentler place. We voted for a better world when we as a whole elected him.
What a proud day for all Americans who love their country.

This is fantastic! I was happy to see John McCain give his congratulations on the award too. I wish the other conservatives could be as gracious. The more some of them talk the more it makes you think they really DO hate America!

If Sherlock Holmes were alive he would have probably said,"Elementary, my dear Watson, it's all a question of interpretation".

Obama has waged war against the Taliban and the Al Qaeda, in the hope that it will bring peace to the world, even if millions of lives are lost.

Bush had invaded Iraq to bring peace in the world.

Russian troops invaded Chechnya, a part of its own country, killing thousands of innocent people, in order to bring peace to its country and thereby the world. Afterall, the Russian President only wanted peace in the world.

Nixon indulged in Watergate, only to bring peace in USA, which was then a super power that controlled the rest of the world. I pity him for having missed out on the Nobel prize.

There are scores of leaders whose heart bled for the conditions of innocent people in the war ravaged countries. They have all waged war only to bring hope for peace. They all deserve to get the Nobel prize!
Sheryl L. Oct 10, 2009, 1:35am EDT
Why do people insist on saying that Obama is the one waging those wars when he inherited them and is doing all he can to find an end?
Julie Ann Dawson Oct 10, 2009, 3:07pm EDT
Because they hate him and will always stand on the polar opposite side of anything he says just to be difficult.

I share your enthusiasm, Chuck, and I am so proud of our President and our Country. It certainly seems that, at least, the Norwegians have forgiven us for how we treated the world in the past 8 years. Obama's ratings world-wide are soaring. The hate-mongers who are siding with the Taliban should be ashamed of themselves and crawl under the biggest rock they can find. To be so un-American at a time when they should be rejoicing is inexcusable.

Apparently the rest of the world sees something that many Americans don't see or want to see. There are those who are angry because they want Obama to fail and this is proving he is on the right track. It's making them look small and petty and instead of being gracious, they continue to act small and petty!

You just summed up what I was thinking and wasn't sure how to express it.
James T. Oct 10, 2009, 4:02am EDT

Didn't have time to read all the other comments. Just want to say this:
President Obama was awarded this because of the hope he brought back to the world at large during his running for the president, and during his acceptance--- not for any peace he has won or negotiated since.
It is really a Hope Award -- for bringing hope to a nation and a world which at the time felt very hopeless. Can we truly say there is no peace felt when hope revives????
Ask the committee. /// And really---- wasn't that bringing of hope quite an accomplishment at such an awful time.?// And yes that is why he was awarded this honor. Lonnie Ray Fowler

No one does all good or all bad, I am not an Obama hater nor am I an Obama lover. Yes the award is an honor, one that I don't think Obama has proven that he deserves. We have had other presidents go against nuclear warfare and also fight for peace and had been in term a lot longer and none were given the award. I am not saying at some point he would not be deserving but I think this is a bit premature and he himself seemed surprised by the gesture.

I am merely curious as to what he did to warrant it. My brother suggested it was his work, pre-Presidential, of course, for nuclear non-proliferation. That actually makes a good answer, but I must say I was a little surprised.

Congrats 2 PBO.
And, I wonder if his 'health-care-union-insurance-co-op-exchange-mandate' will still be worse than the problem. The illogical bills that over the last 5 or 15 years that have been passed as 'law' are what has added greatly to the fractured system we have; additional idiocy is not likely to help. I am not distracted from the very vital issues before our Nation. While I am happy for PBO, his family, and America, American Freedom is still number one for me.
National Bill of Rights Day Holiday is December 15th. If we continue to ignore the vital issues before us, for the pomp and circumstance, we'll deserve what we won't have.
I urge everyone to consider the Bill of Rights Day, and to question why the power-elite have removed that National Holiday from our calanders.
And, if the power elite in congress insist on passing the 'cap&trade' power & money grab, which requires we "reduce (our) carbon fotprint", does that mean I must get a smaller size boot?. Jus' askin'. Or, Maybe they jus' tax the air we that we exhale?.
Rory H. Oct 13, 2009, 12:27am EDT
To BeachBumSon
Because National Holidays cost corporations money and reduces corporate profits, Maybe?
And this is a perfect time for Health Care with so many folks already on the Public Option. Unfortunately the States can't afford it for long. I just had a weird thing happen to me at the Hardware Store. A young girl about twenty some came up to me and said, "I was told that you would know what I need, you know everything."
"I do?"
I don't know her from Eve!
She lifts up her shirt. She has stainless steel staples from her diaphragm to her pants. There was a bit of redness around them. I had seen this before C - section. Good job too. But from the redness they were due to come out. She wanted something to remove them.
"Must have started to really hurt and itch."
Girl, "I need to get under these to cut them." Here.
She lifts the shirt again!
"Do you know what I need?"
Me: "Yes I do!" there is only one tool here that would cut the stainless steel." "It is this."
Girl: "Can't I just get this one tool?"
Me: "No, you will also need this and this too." Sold in a set of six.
Girl: "How can I get this under, Oh use the corner?"
I now have a friend coming over and saying hi.
After a quick hi and hello with my friend. I look around for the girl to ask some really needed questions and give some advice against. She is gone.
We don’t need to reform Health care or expand coverage. After all, this would reduce the profits at the local hardware store!!! And that would be Un American!

The Noble Prize was given because as Political Capital. A vote by the world to what he said he wanted to do and to the deeds he has started. A road begun is a first step in a long journey. He has starting walking in the right direction according to the folks at the Noble who see a need for US to walk in this direction. Humankind is at a turning point we can either make this world heaven or we can make it hell. US, we can follow our President's lead and work towards this goal or we can turn our backs and say this is not for US. Folks, US we must decide!

Sigh. Like so many of the games we seem to play, the 12 days/two weeks spin is an irrelevant canard. A lot of people were nominated just before the deadline. The decision was made now, not then. People need to be a little more honest.

The Nobel Prize committee has made their selection and given their reasons for making the selection. We can agree or disagree, but asking each other to defend or refute the selection is more about us than it is about whether Obama deserves it. The committee picked him, which means by definition that he did deserve it, since they are the ones who make that decision.

We should take it as a source of pride for our country...and as Obama noted in his comments, take it as a call for action.

Lee P. Oct 10, 2009, 8:57am EDT
Hi again Chuck. I'm just stopping by to apologize for incorrectly reporting the Nobel Peace Prize cash award amount. I said it was ten million dollars, information I received from a Google chart. I went back and read the chart where I obtained my facts and the ten million listed was in Swedish kronor (SEK), which converts to about one million six hundred thousand in U.S. dollars. You just can't retire on a million and a half anymore. He would have to give up his date night vacations and start shopping at Wal Mart like I do. Wouldn’t it be nice to see our President walking down the aisle of Wal Mart looking for a cheap box of Fruit Loops. Or maybe not. We would know that our economy was really bad if that happened. I think our President is going to have keep on working for peace in the world. It seem to be allusive.

Congratulations President Obama.
Chuck L. Oct 10, 2009, 9:09am EDT
Good heavens, Lee. You were right on the number, just wrong on the currency. I'd settle for a million and a half, wouldn't you? And I'd LOVE to be in a position to give it away (although no charity will see all of it - IRS rules don't allow that).

Sorry folks, Obama a has not earned this award. Not yet. Let's see what he does with the the majority of his first term before we start doing stuff like this.

He has plenty of name recognition but not many accomplishments.

Not going to fret over this little award though, there are more important things to be concerned about...
Doc, in the middle, holding on... Curmudgeon esq. Oct 10, 2009, 9:39am EDT
Besides, under federal law he can't keep the money anyway...
Chuck L. Oct 10, 2009, 10:10am EDT

Doc, in the middle, holding on... Curmudgeon esq. Oct 10, 2009, 10:45am EDT
Looks like I was wrong about that, seems that under the rules he could keep it.

I see that he has chosen to do the honorable thing though and donate it to charity.

really I admire the man, even if I didn't vote for him, but weary of how over the top everything is ABOUT him. I don't blame HIM for it though...

As I've posted elsewhere - The Peace Prize should be awarded "to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses."

Even SNL knows pBO has done *nothing... As long as intelligent people from both sides are still stupid enough to keep rubber stamping these shills into office, we are getting what we deserve.
Ali Hussein Lopez Oct 10, 2009, 11:30am EDT
The peace prize should be awarded to the person whom the prize committee considers deserving, and that's the way their system has always works.

If you're worldview is based on what SNL says, then you might want to reconsider your own objectivity.
Bernie W. Oct 10, 2009, 11:52am EDT
I was quoting from their rules, which apparently they didn't value enough to follow. The SNL comment that "*even* SNL knows..." is not 'basing' my worldview on SNL, but stating that even low brow comedy on the boob tube is smart enough to figure out what the deal is.

Face it - just like the pro Bush people were duped, all of this shinola about Obama is being used to dupe people.
Julie Ann Dawson Oct 10, 2009, 3:11pm EDT
I already mentioned this. The Nobel is about fraternity and moving toward peace. If you are going to interpret it to mean hard and cold completion, then the dalai lama did NOT deserve his award either. Tibet is still under China's thumb, and while he is inspirational he has never reduced one army or prevented one war.

It is about INSPIRING a way to peace. Look at the past winners. Many were far more inspirational that productive in terms of peace goals.
Bernie W. Oct 10, 2009, 3:20pm EDT
...and traffic laws are about preventing accidents - that doesn't make stop signs optional. Funny that you should bring up Tibet and the DL, didn't Obama throw them under the bus recently?

"Some in China's democracy movement are outraged at what they see as a weak stance on rights by Obama, who the same week as Friday's announcement avoided a meeting with Tibet's exiled Dalai Lama that would have upset Beijing."

All in the name of peace I am sure....
