Why do they need to do this?

Aren't they concerned about the outcome, what if it causes issues? What if it causes a problem with the moon?

The moon has been hit millions of times by larger objects going far faster than anything we can provide. It seems to have survived all right.

Is it absoutely neccessary to shot a rocket, or whatever at the moon, to see if there is water?

Finding a significant amount of water on the moon would be a huge help in exploiting its resources. That's a supply of rocket fuel, for example.

is it a real smart thing to do though.....
blow up something as vitally important to earth ? ? ?

I know they are rationalizing on how important it is for further moon cities and further space exploration.....

but what if stuff happened that they didn't expect or even think about???

Water on the moon will not make me buy a ticket. A&W Root Beer stand would catch my attention thought, then the golden arches would follow. Wow long way to go for a treat.
