H1N1 shots might need more investigation.

My dear friend Diane wasn't at work when I went by there this afternoon.  I found out that her  parents and her younger sister had gone for the swine flu shots, and it was disastrous!  Her parents were both in intensive care for several days, but they're getting well.  Little sister (in her late 20s) died yesterday.  The cause of death was a reaction to the H1N1 shot.

I'm horrified and terribly sad, but also a bit frightened.   I've heard again and again that studies have shown these shots to have no negative side effects.  I'd say death is a very negative side effect.  I'm one of the people who is supposed to be sure to be getting the shot because of chronic lung problems.  There's no way I will now!

Are you planning to get a swine fu shot?

No way! I never was going to take this shot of death and I am so very sorry for your friends loss. This is very frightening indeed.
Joanne Vicente Oct 2, 2009, 7:34pm EDT
Just as I finished typing that, a news report about how safe it is was aired. I don't agree, at all.
Thank you for your sympathy.

I never get flu shots -- and I don't get the flu
got it once in 1986, and was well within three days

How fortunate you are! And I don't mean that sarcastically at all, even though it seems that way. I envy you. We teachers get it quite often, since the kids give us those gifts!

I used to substitute teach -- never got a thing
-- but I know my own and my family's medical history, and that plays a large role in my decisions about health care
-- everybody should make informed decisions
-- in my case, the flu of winter 1959 nearly killed me, so I got a huge dose of immunity to most viruses

Nope don't plan on getting that shot. Thankfully I will no longer be living in Florida by time thy start giving the shot to kids at school. I am against it because there has not been enough testing for reactions and other srious conditions assicated with it. Anytime the goverment says a shot is safe when it just comes out in a short period of time, it is not.

My daughter had reactions to the baby shots she had to get to go to school. No way am I going to subject her to more pain or suffering without more proof.
Joanne Vicente Oct 2, 2009, 8:57pm EDT
It might be given through the schools, but it won't be all that easily done. Parental permission is an absolute must!

I'm really on the fence about it; so sorry for your friend's loss! It really does seem as though it's been thrown out there too quickly.
Joanne Vicente Oct 2, 2009, 10:45pm EDT
The problem, though, is that the disease is spreading so quickly, and killing so many people. It's really a dilemma..

Joanne:
We always get our seasonal flu vaccine due to respiratory and heart issues. My son is on a medication for arthritis that makes his immune system weak. I don't think there is a chance in hell that anyone could make him (age24) take that H1N1 vaccine. We all agree here, it's too new...no way. There is a chance of getting H1N1, but that's not a death sentence. When you know you're taking this vaccine with potential side effects, it's not a good idea. I will wait and see...
Joanne Vicente Oct 3, 2009, 12:02am EDT
I can't help wondering why the news reports are always saying there are no harmful side effects!

Thank you. Do think twice before considering this immunization! hh
Johnice R. Oct 3, 2009, 3:15pm EDT
Joanne, I just do not understand your feelings towards the vaccine! Is this the first vaccine against the flu? NO! The FDA are working quite hard to make enough to treat everyone in the most susceptible groups. So what is your exact apprehension?
Johnice R. Oct 3, 2009, 3:19pm EDT
I am sorry that anyone died yet, I have confidence that the autopsy will show some definitive reason that young woman died.
Joanne Vicente Oct 3, 2009, 4:35pm EDT
The preliminary autopsy showed a reaction to the vaccine. Her parents were close to death in intensive care, as well.
I don't think anyone should have to die trying to prevent potentially fatal illness. I believe we need more information, and a lot more case studies.
Joanne Vicente Oct 13, 2009, 5:10pm EDT
The final autopsy said there were a number of contaminants in the serum, and that's why she died.
Sheri P. Oct 27, 2009, 4:37pm EDT
thats so sad...our doctor just said this past week, that the H1N1 vaccine is safe and made just like the seasonal flu vaccine. She works with immune dysfunctions. Sorry, but I will continue to wait and see. We got our pneumonia vaccines, because most of the deaths from swine are from pneumonia or strep. I will continue to take antioxidants, vitamins, and stay away from other sick people when possible
Joanne Vicente Oct 27, 2009, 5:24pm EDT
Do doctors get their information from the drug companies, I wonder?
Sheri P. Oct 29, 2009, 4:42pm EDT
Joanne...the doctor that we see, deals with immune dysfunctions. She does use medications, as well as natural treatments. I'm confused but not confused enough to get the H1N1 vaccine.
Joanne Vicente Oct 29, 2009, 4:56pm EDT
I wish natural remedies were more widespread, so fewer people would think they're only for nuts!

Getting any vaccination is essentially giving you the virus. We've had to go over the in's and out's of this stuff when in Microbiology for Nursing. It made me rethink the immunizations that they require children to get. Many people get the flu when they get the flu shot, but it's supposed to be a lighter version. Doesn't always happen that way, which is very sad. It's hard to decide which is better, to get the shot or not.
Joanne Vicente Oct 3, 2009, 4:55pm EDT
It is a terribly difficult decision. The one teacher at my school who is just horrible hasn't lost her job because she has a lawsuit pending, claiming that she got MS from the shots they required all special-needs teachers to get. It's illegal for anyone to sue the school system while employed there, so they keep her. It's a shame for the autistic kids she works with, but I guess the school system just sees the dollars.

No!!!!!!!!!!!!! I do not trust the Drug companies or their brown nose sidekick, the FDA.
I hope this sad death will convince others not to get this 'We the Guinea Pg' shot.
Joanne Vicente Oct 4, 2009, 4:53pm EDT
I can't help wondering why the media insist on telling us there are no negative side effects. Death of a vibrant young woman is certainly negative!
Sheri P. Oct 27, 2009, 4:38pm EDT
I've also seen some reactions like dystonia, too

Hello

Joanne Vicente Oct 4, 2009, 7:52pm EDT
I'm really afraid of it, and I just heard another national news report that said there are no known negative side effects. Where do they get their information?
HH
Renita P. Oct 5, 2009, 2:15pm EDT
They get their info from the profits. Seriously. It's disgusting how many drugs they allow out on the market only to recall them shortly after because of deaths or other serious side effects. All because they're in too much of a hurry for the cash to do the necessary longer-term testing.

No way. Not for me. The problem is that they've had no time to really test the vaccine. And for the normal person with a healthy immune system, the swine flu is very treatable. I had a friend who had some serious side effects of a regular flu vaccine a couple o fyears ago. they think maybe they hit a nerve when they gave her the shot but it partially paralyzed her arm and she had to go through alot of phys. therapy and was in alot of pain for quite a while.

I just saw a news report that said the VERY SAFE inhaled version is being given to little children beginning today. I really hope I'm unnecessarily concerned, but it doesn't seem so.

I always think I should because of my respiratory problems but don't get around to it. It's an easy decision this year since I can't pay for the shot and groceries, too.

I've had the flu several times and only once did I think I was at death's door. Hope I don't regret my decision this year.

I'm pregnant so I am a priority for getting the vaccination. But I don't know how I can submit myself to a shot that has never been tested, since it's new. No one knows the reactions that I could have, that anyone can have. And how can they say, and be so sure, that it is safe?? They can't say that and mean it. They have NO idea what it will do to people. They barely know the week later reactions. It will be years before they know the long-term repercussions and by that time they can attribute all of the side-effects to something else.
Joanne Vicente Oct 6, 2009, 6:29pm EDT

I saw a report yesterday that said that very few young people ever died from any flu....until they started getting vaccines. I stopped getting regular flu shots a few years ago. And, no, I won't be getting the swine flu shot.

Did you realize the Dr. Oz (ABC) who has been telling everyone to get the swine flu shots admitted in an interview that his own wife and kids won't be getting it?
Joanne Vicente Oct 20, 2009, 5:52pm EDT
That seems like about what;s happening - a sort of coverup, but for no realistic reason!

Sorry you have had the flu so many times. It isn't as if I haven't been exposed to the flu. They would be dropping like flies and I just didn't get it. Sending God's protective while light to surround you and all the wonderful people in Gather.

you have to be careful who they get the shots from. who the distributor is.
Joanne Vicente Oct 24, 2009, 4:23pm EDT
I don't know that patients can even find that out. Doctors have regular suppliers, but where do they get what they deliver???

oh wow that is very scary! I am sorry about your friend's sister's loss! I haven't gotten the regular flu shot and I think I am less likely to get the swine flu shot since we really don't know enough on the effectiveness of it or not.

It's really difficult to figure out what to do when the media keep pushing us to get vaccinated!

Thanks for this article, and discussion. I haven't decided, seems to be too much controversy about the safety of this "rushed" vaccine, so am leaning toward not getting it.

It is a real dilemma.

I'm so sorry about your friend and her family. I wasn't planning on any shots for my kids or me before and not now for sure! I hope the people who lie and say there are no negative side effects can live with their consciences.
Joanne Vicente Oct 25, 2009, 10:26am EDT
I just can't imagine why the news reports aren't more accurate!
Thank you.
Abby N. Oct 25, 2009, 10:33am EDT
I was thinking perhaps forward this post to several news stations but I didn't know if you wanted to do that and then also ask them why they aren't being honest. Just an idea.
Joanne Vicente Oct 25, 2009, 10:43am EDT
I've done that. They all send back automatic "thank you for your input" notes.
