Spider web trivia.

We had a light fog the other morning and looking out the window I noticed this huge spider web hanging from the porch. It was pretty with the water droplets on it. I took a picture but didn't bother it. Yesterday morning I noticed it was gone but another one was about 4 feet away. It looked like the same spider so I tried to look it up. Didn't find the name of the spider but was amazed when I read that they eat their web and then build another one. I knew they repaired their web but had no idea they ate them. I wonder why.

never hear they ate them before, this one is a barn spider you can tell by the cat like face it has on its underside

I like the looks of a spider web built as an orb, but although I know spiders eat a lot of insects, I don't think I could handle one.

Maybe they eat the web because it holds prey. And/or because it provides them with some vitamin or mineral they need to keep making webs and staying alive.

I knew they ate the webb that held their prey but not the webb as a whole.

I continue to be amazed by the number of great photographers on gather..and here's another example. I think this is one of the best spider web photos I've seen. I didn't know that spiders ate their webs, but I always heard they ate their mates...
