The right will do anything to defame and defeat Obama because he might succeed in actually changing American society for the better, and the conservatives hate change.

There is a despair driven power behind all this. It is as if decades of repressed ill mannered behavior has now been let loose.

I've recently written: People who compare Obama or George W. to Hitler, demonstrate a total lack of understanding of Hitler, history and humanity, showing clearly their total lack of good, sound, reasonable argument, appearing only to True Believers and other crazies.

This idea of demonizing who we disagree with sickens me, reminding me of kids in the schoolyard.

I recall a Twilight Zone episode where a guy promoting Nazi views got to meet Hitler. The meeting didn't go well. They say: You never want to meet your heroes.

By today's standards, Twilight Zone was awful preachy. Yet, always good social commentary. Maybe that's one of the factors in my writing social commentary today. I recall another Twilight Zone: some scientists decided to commit a fraud in the name of world peace. They morphed one of their own into a 'space man,' with the plan to have him come to earth, and warn us to get our act together. The idea was, with a common enemy, earth would unite.

And who can forget "The Day the Earth Stood Still." I've not seen the remake.

Klaatu: "I am fearful when I see people substituting fear for reason."

The movie was released in 1951, before I was born, yet this statement is as true today as it was then. I watch the shows from the 50's and 60's and wonder why we still don't get it.

Klaatu: "I'm impatient with stupidity. My people have learned to live without it."

I agree. Obama is no Hitler. Never will be.

Oh my! I missed the news about this. (Now you know why I don't read the news!)

This occured during the People's Tea Party. A right wing inspired march on the capitol.

I learned this week that a group may not use racial stereotypes to slam our President and First Lady in their group banner, but it is okay to use other folks' religious symbols and Hitler-style facial hair to fuel their hatred.

I just wish they would be open and call their group what it is - Gather's very own KKK group.

The problems are that they are either ignorant of history and the the terrible things done under the Nazis, or they do not believe it really happened, or at heart, they are facists themselves.

I do not believe in nor advocate a socialist society, but given the choice of a religious oligarchy or socialism, what would you choose?

Guess which one they would vote for.

I'm a hugh advocate of free and open speech in general public forums like this. The mass of people will see crazy speech for what it is: crazy. Those who believe the insanity would without hearing the speech, end up in a metaphorical bell tower scoping out the school yard with a high powered rifle anyway.

Hate speech doesn't win followers. Reason wins out in the end. People, by far, look out for their own interests, which is why such speech is based on fear and them taking something from us. Just because they're the loudest doesn't make them them most. For example, the few thousand Muslims who have declared war on America are greatly outnumbered by the billion + who haven't.

Crazies will always be crazy, no matter what we say or do. It's best to let them talk. That way they're on the soapbox and not hiding in the shadows oiling a gun.

To a point I agree, but then the aformentioned HItler started out as one of them "Crazies." I agree to all the concepts on free speech. Given that, it is my right also, and so I exercised it. I did not ask for a law banning them.

Please do not take me wrong. I am not arguing with you, far from it, however there are graves in Europe with my famly in them and no markers to let the world they ever passed through.

With TV and computers as a world stage, the crazies might just get their way.

As even a high school drop out like myself knows, Dave: Obama and Bush, Jr cannot in anyway be compared with Hitler or the Nazi doctrine. One of the battle cries that came out to justify the invasion of Iraq was: Saddam is just like Hitler followed by: You don't defend Hitler, do you?

In my not-so-humble opinion, any time the Hitler comparison comes up, all reason has been abandoned. Nothing in modern history can be compared to Hitler but maybe the Japanese actions in China during WW2 and maybe the Khmer Rouge.

I actually attended an Nazi rally back in the 70's. Sure, there were a couple of people hanging on every word and some True Believers. However, by far, the people showing up were like me: like you stop to gawk at a traffic accident. The doctrine is absurd, flying in the face of everything we (scientifically) know. Appealing to the disenfranchised and people with borderline personality disorders.

I do agree such speech in an open forum should never be banned; however, I also agree we should never be silent, pushing back with reason.

In places such as the work place, I feel behavior and speech needs to be controlled, limited. Like my father once said: "My freedom to swing my fist ends where your nose begins."

People in the workplace should be free from taunting of any kind. You'd be surprised (maybe you wouldn't) what white non-jewish men say and do when they believe themselves in like company. I said the other day: "all someone needs to be sick in love with women is to spend time with men."

Karl, I was reading your comment and nodding my head 'yes yes yes' until I got to your last paragraph. I'm a white non-Jewish man (married to a Jewish woman). I've been in the company of white non-Jewish men and heard some pretty awful things said. But I've also been in the company of white non-Jewish women who, while not quite as graphic, were saying things just as awful. And if you can believe it or not, I've heard some awful things said by Jews, too.

Yes, I agree with the both of you and I must also agree that many Jews are fanatics also, guilty of the same biases and hatreds. If history teaches us anythin, it is that timing is everything.

Hitler might not have become what he was but for the Great Derpession. Russia might never have had the communists if the czars had not oppressed the people. Nobody listend to Marx until the people were stirred to revolt.

By the way Karl, Stalin might have been classed the same as Hitler, but he was on the winning side.

Oh yeah, I forgot about Stalin. I think Hitler and the millions of Russians killed on Russian soil had much to do with molding Russian politics and society. Look at how our society closed down after 9-11. Image if it were millions killed instead of thousands? Even as a kid, understanding the history of Russian, I could understand why they lived as they did. I even said: "We don't have to beat Russian. We just have to wait (until they get over WW2)."

R.F., I didn't mean to sound so general. My point was, when people group, believing they're surrounded by their ilk, really become unhinged. Margaret Mead said that we can't truly understand another culture unless we actually emerge ourself in that culture.

As a white man among white men, that's the only experience I can speak directly to, though I have a short period of exception. I can draw your attention to two movies, off the top of my head. Duskin Hoffman in Tootsie and James Whitmore in Black Like Me. In each, the protagonist got to experience conversations they've never have heard otherwise. Let me add James Stewart in Broken Arrow.

Human beings have an obscene (though I wish to use the word insane), irrational (I want to use the work hubris) pride of birthright and happenstance, teetering between megalomania and egocentrism. I've sat in wide-eyed amazement over the level of argument over PC vs. Mac. I recall a news clip from the late 90's, an adult male yelling red-faced at a group of pre-teen Catholic girls in Ireland -- yelling because they're Catholic. A new kid in ninth grade, I was put against the lockers because another kid thought I'd been suppressing him for two hundred years.

Look at all the people who opposed everything Bush said, simply because Bush was the Republican leader.

Look at all the people who oppose everything Obama says, simply because Obama is the Democratic leader.

Obscene, irrational, teetering between megalomania and egocentrism.

I've said of either, they could come up with a cure for cancer and the other side would slam them for putting doctors and other healthcare workers out of work.

Let me close with a short story I wrote. I call it Pride of Place. Often, I don't see much difference between bigotry and patriotism.

Pride of Place

When I was nine years old, we moved. I set out to explore my new surroundings. My travels took me finally eight blocks from my house, three blocks on the other side of the literal and proverbial railroad tracks. I met three kids at a small park. We got along OK, me being new, them excited to show and tell. They played a game they called flying.

The idea was to swing as high as they could and jump as far as they could. I declined a turn but was told some day I'd fly with the best of them.

"Where's your house?"

I pointed. "'Bout eight blocks that way."

They roughed me up, pushed me to the ground and took a couple of halfhearted kicks, finally telling me to run back to my neighborhood and stay out of theirs. After all, I was told, they'll number one.

I walked.

Hate takes many forms, mostly irrational. Telling the hate mongers to shut up if futile.

John, I must respectfuly agree and disagree. Somebody has to stand up to fanatics or the fanatics will own the world. Telling themn to shut up is but the first step, it never works, but it puts them on notice.

I didn't imply that one shouldn't tell them to shut up; I just said it's futile.

That is because of the growth and ubiquitous internet and the social groups there in. Technology in the hands of morons who enjoy and live for hate need a target and the fuse is lit by Faux and Limbaugh et al.

Given that I have become rather terrified of the anger and hostility and the need to gather up arms, I think you made an excellent statement in this snippet. The fact that Limbaugh and Beck are making huge sums of money by inciting people obviously ill-informed really angers me. It also makes me wonder how much damage is a person willing to do to others to make money, and in some of the talk show hosts we can see they are willing to do a lot.
