subtitle: the true adventures of the first American explorer to bring back China's most exotic animal
In 1936, a woman who'd been part of the clubbing set - a dress designer - decided to go to China to bring back a baby panda. Her husband had been on a similar trek and died in the process.
She had many hardships along the way, but also many joys. She brought back a YOUNG baby during her first trip.
Then she went back. This was a very different experience, due in part to the fact that Japan was in the process of invading and taking over China.
She has her ups and downs. The book is very exciting, but I have my reservations about her. She is SO upset at animals being abused, yet wears fur coats, eats rare pheasant ... yes, she's human with human ambiguities.
