President Obama is on is way to Copenhagen, Denmark to meet with the International Olympic Committee and make a pitch for Chicago to host the 2016 Summer Olympics.
A personal appearance by Obama, the first by a sitting U.S. president at an Olympic session, could potentially play a crucial role in swaying votes by International Olympic Committee (IOC) members who must choose between Chicago, Madrid, Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo. Olympic observers have seen the contest as one of the closest ever with no clear front-runner and all four bids capable of succeeding. (Reuters)
It will be a quick trip for the president. Leaving this evening, he will arrive early on Friday in Copenhagen where he will go directly to Bella Convention Center just in time to make his bid with First Lady Michelle Obama, both of whom will make presentations in support of Chicago. Then the president will head back home to D.C. on Air Force One.
Each of the cities in contention will make a presentation on Friday in the Danish capital to the IOC membership who will then cast their votes the same day. The IOC has 115 members. (Reuters)
