This is one of my worse fears...

I am sitting here watching,  the news ( not any idea why) but there was a breaking news alert.  The breaking news was a bus and mini van had an accident. 

 

The bus was stopped and it red flashers on and the mini van apparently did not see them or paid attention the red flashers. The mini van hit a 13 year old and 16 year old. 

 

My question is here why did they not stop? Me as a mother and even before kids I ALWAYS stopped.  The thought that goes through my brain is IF this was my kid would I want them to stop? of course the answer is yes,   To me it means I think about how I would feel as a mother if something happen to a child. 

 

I am always worried about the unknown on the bus, I mean this is a perfect example of what possibly could happen. 

Again my question is why did they not stop???

 

My heart and my thoughts are going out to both family..

I have not heard of deaths, and not sure of the status of the kids..

 

UPDATE:

Just got update from the news.. Apparently the kids were crossing the street to get on the bus, and the mini van hit them.. The report says the status of the kids is unknown, but they are at an area hospital.

I hope they were not killed, that is very sad, probably the driver of the mini van was late for work and speeding and couldn't stop in time, but who knows. I just hope the kids are OK. When I went to pick up my youngest from school yesterday there was a big red pick up truck in front of me, we were both sitting waiting for the crossing guard to cross a bunch of kids and when the crossing guard stood back to let us pass he took off, he was doing at least 40 in the school zone, the crossing guard was before you even reach the school and people cross at 2 other areas without crossing guards when leaving the school, and this guy just sped right through, if a kid had walked in to the street he would not have been able to stop. Honestly I don't know what people are thinking sometimes.

today there was three boys running across the road near the school. I stopped and was flashing my lights to let the boys know that it was safe to cross. On the other side I saw the school bus barreling forward. She never put her brakes on, she was still moving when the last boy crossed over to my side of the road. She would have hit him had he dropped something to pick it up. I was horrified! I didn't get to see the bus number or the bus driver.

So sad, the minivan driver, was probably texting or using the cell phone and did not see them.

Perhaps distracted by a cell phone or texting.
I was hit by a car while walking across the street at a corner 9 years ago. I was thrown into the air and came down on my left side. Luckily my physical injuries were limited to severe bruising, but the mental anguish has had long lasting effects. I hope these children are not seriously injured and escape the lasting problems from this incident.

Having lost my only daughter to a school bus accident, I have fought and tried to educate people through newpapers and legislation about the hazards of school buses and how people need to respect that when you see them, there are children around. I've tried to get the school districts to institute a system of bus monitors or matrons to help protect the children getting on and off the buses, but no one listens, and these type of accidents happen again and again, several times every year.

That is horrible Katie. Keep up the fight. Luckily my kids get on and off the bus at the end of our driveway, so luckily they aren't crossing the street.

Awful. I was knocked down in a parking lot by one driver who backed into me and last year while in my scooter someone backed into me, thank God they were going slow...but she didn't check her rear view mirror when she backed out.... Neither said they were sorry either...to many people are in a hurry these days to look. It is sad because those kids were not doing anything wrong. People are supposed to stop and keep away from school buses, I bet this driver is going to get the book thrown at them.

i really hope they do, from what is still coming out, it sounds like the driver chose not to stop, I guess they also clipped a 3rd kid who was not hurt

its so sad. I always worried about this also. that is why I liked the twin's bus driver last year..he'd park dead center in the street so no one could get by. their new bus driver doesn't do that..neither does austin's

that is so scary! i don't understand why the person didn't stop, either. i mean.. what were they doing that they weren't able to see 2 children crossing the street? i know there's been a lot of reports of texting and driving... maybe that's what they were doing and they didn't look up in time. that stuff seriously needs to be banned. i hope these kids will recover. =[

A few years ago on the main road by our house, a teenaged girl was hit by a car and killed while waiting for her school bus in the dark by the road. It was a terrible tragedy. On a busy road, its hard for drivers to see kids in the dark in the mornings.

I think they might not have noticed or known what to do when the red lights were flashing. A lot of people drive without licenses and may not know all the rules of the road.

Each morning, as i take my child to the bus stop to wait for his school bus, i see some useless drivers who dont obey road instructions nor the school bus signs. It gets on my nerves so badly.

I dont understand at all. So goes the saying that though we might be sane drivers, the driver next to you might be crazy.

I'm glad my son does not ride the bus. I just saw this on the news it reported the 13 year old has broken somethings (I think legs) and the 16 year old has a broken ankle.

My brother was hit by an ambulance when he was crossing the street for school. We had the light and a crossing guard. You never know what to expect. I always go 20 miles an hour in an area that there are children going to school. I always try to watch for cusses and children. I don't understand why people can't worry more about the children in our neighborhoods.

I really don't understand why people do NOT stop. I always stop. I"m also the bitch that writes down the plate numbers of cars that don't and report them to the local P.D.

An 8 yr old boy just died from being hit by a mni van afer running out in front ofit at a bus stop. No sidewalks or adults around.

Some people are just not paying any attention to what is going on around them.

I do not allow my kids outside by themseleves even thou the bus stops in front of my house. As I have seen vehicles not slow down soon enough. However my teen son disagrees and thinks my 10 yr old son is old enough to get himself on the bus.

iT IS DARK WHEN MY KIDS GET ON THE BUS...TO YOUNG TO BE OUTSIDE WHILE DARK.

City dwellers may be less familiar with the stopping process than suburban or rural folks. In our city, there were no school buses, so new drivers didn't get much experience.

My gut feeling is that this accident was caused by a driver talking on a cell phone. That's how my friend's daughter was killed. pif
