The tree tops filled with melodies as cacophonic symphony of reds, oranges and some greens welcomed the cold northerly breeze because they knew Angels would catch their fall. Wanting to look their best, they all put on their best colors, except for a few greens who seemed forever fussy. Such thoughts of an idle child filled with wonderment and loving such awe. Autumn brought forth in Mary Travers such passions, I believe. A heart of kindness and compassion. A beloved artist. The following story is a humble fiction to honor the wonderful inspirational life of Mary Travers.
Mary loved pretty ribbons, but it just didn’t seem right a scary dragon would have a ribbon on and she said so. As she started to leave the toy department with her mom, she heard a muffled sob and turned around to see why. A single tear drop under the dragon’s eye seemed to say, ’I’m not scary. I’m just a bit puffy.’ Just then this puffy dragon fell off the shelf and it looked like disaster, at least a nasty bump on the head. Mary let the baklava she was eating fall to the floor and saved this puffy dragon who said, ’That was fun. Can we do it again?’ Mary was astonished and whispered, ’You’re talking.’ The dragon gave a bit of a frown and huffed, ’Of course I’m talking. Do I look like a horse?’
Barbie dolls weren’t yet in existence, so the dragon was a close second and Mary’s mom bought this dragon. Little did either of them know what they had stumbled on. This was Puff The Magic Dragon, from a long line of friendly dragons. That’s all and good, but he was all about adventure in words, actions, art, songs, mirrors, walking the dog and almost anything at all. These were times of always smiling and of counting stars in the sky before tomorrow.
Although the tales of adventure are many in a rainbow‘s soul, the tale of Tommy Starfish was found inside a picture book and as the pages turned this adventure had both highs and lows. Tommy Starfish had been a naughty starfish by swimming too close to the shoreline. His mama had warned of getting stranded high and dry on the sand. A big wave came in and Tommy was thrown high on the beach. Things looked dire. Tommy might possibly end up being a souvenir. Mary said to Puff, ’What can we do to save poor Tommy?’ Puff said, ’What we resemble in our hearts, if love, we may start.’
The picture opened vividly and Mary saw Puff on the beach. Unfortunately, Puff had forgotten his glasses and no starfish could he see. Starfish are not all that conversational, even in cases of danger, so Puff could not hear Tommy because he didn’t speak. Puff said, ’I need your help Mary. The hour is getting late and only you can guide me to poor Tommy before it’s too late.’ Although Puff was rather bad with right and left directions, Tommy Starfish was saved. As a follow up, Tommy later wanted to learn to play the Dragon song on guitar to say thanks to Puff, but the B minor was a bit difficult. When Puff heard Tommy Starfish play this song, he asked Mary to sing along and they had another very pleasant adventure.

A good motivation is what is needed: compassion without dogmatism, without complicated philosophy; just understanding that others are human brothers and sisters and respecting their human rights and dignities. That we humans can help each other is one of our unique human capacities.

The day we heard about Mary's death, we played PPM Cds in the car as we traveled as a tribute to one that was an important voice when we were coming of age.
