The dh and I have been having a "fight" when to turn on the heat for the season. I agree it is chilly out there, but I am personally not sure we should have the heat on. I can totally understand where he is coming from he does not want the kids cold.
Well right now we are not on a budget or winter protection so we will have to have the bill paid in full before we can do that. So I called them today and they were able to help me understand when the billing cycle is, so I have an idea on how frugal I have to be with the heat.
Anyways with that going on with me, it got me to wondering, for those of you up here in the cold north or what ever part, when do you turn your heat on? do you go by degree outside? or do you go by date? or does it just depend???

We have climate control on our heating and cooling set to 72 so the heat or air conditioning comes off and on according to temperature of each room. Being in So Cal though we don't use much heat maybe 1 - 2 weeks of the year.
If your family is cold but its too soon to turn on the heat for you a pair of socks and long sleeved shirt or sweater can remedy the problem and save your budget.
chill out, or just pile more blankets on the beds.
If it gets really cold, 50's-40's we'll use space heaters, if it gets colder we'll use whole house heat.
Yes it can get that cold, usually -Jan. Feb. here, it lasts for a few days.
One thing about most Florida homes, they keep cold air in - air conditioner air and keep hot outside air out.
This works in winter and keeps cold air in even if temperatures rise outside, whish makes space heaters or fireplaces a nice thing.
We have plug in heaters, then the lights from the plants (80's usually) is pretty much how we do it here.
It is amazing how warm our place stays even when there is snow outside.....
Cloths are warn for a reason. Of course my boys keep there windows open on very cold days and nights. I do not understand this but...... there old enough to close there window.
So answer the question when we turn our heat on, we really do not have any real heat to turn on.
But we are not that cold here.
