Apple recently hired Michael Tchao, one of the original designers of the Apple Newton, a device that was perhaps too far ahead of its time when it came on the scene some 15 years ago (and perhaps an imperfect product at any rate). Tchao spent 10 years working at Apple, and he now rejoins the company as the Vice President of Product Marketing. Does Tchao's return presage a marketing pre-release ramp-up for the eagerly anticipated Apple tablet? Hard to say. Rumors are par for the course regarding the next big Apple release, but in recent months they've been ratcheted up several levels along with Steve Jobs' return. Given Microsoft's rumblings in this arena I imagine Apple won't be too far behind (and if history is any guide, they're actually far, far ahead). Either way, let's hope that whatever Apple has in store, it is not another Apple Newton.
