Well! ady, I have to disagree with your views. Polanski is undoubtedly a genius who has directed Oscar-winning movies. All geniuses have their weaker moments when they temporarily loose control of their senses. He cannot be equated to a serial rapist. He has contributed a lot to society through his films. One has to consider his positive achievement against a few minor flaws. Even the 13-year old girl he molested, now a 35-year old mother, is in favor of dropping the charges against him.

wow I can not believe that people think it is ok to have sex with a child. Lots of people that do horrible things have contributed to society. I hope that we don't start to punish people based on the good deeds that they have performed, the punishment should be the same whether one is famous or an average Joe.

Molesting a 13 year-old girl is not a "minor flaw."

Just because he is a great director should not allow him to avoid the consequences of his action. Not only did he break the law but he also ran from the law.

The other part of just letting all this go is that any criminal will run away like he did a figure it would all go away...and anyone out there who they finally find would use what happens in this case ...as it would set a precedent. This case is very important because of future cases where people did horrible things and just took off.

I think it's great the woman that his happened to forgave him but he did her major damage. He was 45 years old at the time.

People should be outraged...I don't care how old he is or how long ago this happened. Look at Bernie Madoff and all the people he ripped off....so he is old...many people now suffer for what he did, swindling them out of their retirement money...so we should look the other way because he is old. Being old is not a break the law you can pass go card unless you suffer from dementia or another medical condition where it can be proved you were some how debilitated from poor judgment.

People with a name, fame or fortune should not be allowed to get away with things. Maybe his sentence will be milder because of the victims lack of desire to press charges, but he should be held accountable for what he did back then. Running away usually adds charges, and is not rewarded.

I know myself what unwanted sexual attention does to a child....and I can tell you it messes you up. Trust goes out the window and intimacy is very difficult... The damage to a child is more than most people think. Adults are supposed to protect children not use them, whether drunk or on drugs. When they have mental disease, that is not being treated, the others who would be in a position to get them treated....as not being in their right mind can lead to various behaviors.

This woman may want to put it behind her and not go through it in court, but if anyone thinks that what happened to her wasn't horrific they are very very mixed up in their sense of right and wrong.

It seems that the time served was a plea bargain reached. When it appeared the judge wanted to change the sentence and add time, Polanski ran. While I think it should have been more time to begin with, the judicial system in the US is based, in part, on plea bargaining (right or wrong). If that cannot be trusted on both sides, I suspect we have a bigger issue.

Of course, if he is returned, there will be time added for the fugitive status.

No, her wishes should not be honored. Although I respect that the victim does not want to have to relive the event in her mind, and she got paid a settlement so she just wants to move on, but punishing a rapist is about more than just the one victim of that one particular rape. It is about keeping the rapist off the streets so he can't rape someone else and it is about deterring other potential rapists.

There won't be a trial so the victim wouldn't have to be involved with his return.

Well, if Hollyweird can Lobby for this guy not to come to America, we can BOYCOTT their films or movies, whatever they call them today. Oh wait, I already boycott 98% of the Hollyweird ways, means, movies...

Even if he were to get a light sentence having to do with the original case, which I believe was already settled, and only sentencing was left to do, when he jumped bail (yet another bad judment call), there is still the fact that it's illegal to jump bail.

He needs to appear and be accountable for that as well. He needs to be accountable for SOMETHING he's done, in this whole situation.

It reminds me of how all the hollywood people came together in support of Rob Lowe back when he was filming (secretly) his sexual escapades, and one was a minor.

I think he does deserve to do time but I was wondering one thing. Isn't there a statute of limitations for certain crimes? After 30 years one would think that time for this crime is up. Maybe we should just let him stay there, ban him from the US and let other countries worry about his perverted attentions.

This guy was already prosecuted and found guilty. He plead guilty, then when the arrangement he thought he had bought with the judge didn't come to fruition, he skipped town.

There is no statute of limitations for fleeing the country rather than show up at sentencing. It isn't genius that drugs and rapes a little girl -- it's decadence. I am surprised at some of the lenient responses. Hollywood, go to he11, I don't think Obama is going to be lenient.

I think he should have done his time but at this point I think they should have dropped this. This isn't just about him, this is about his victim too. She was thrown into the spotlight decades ago when this story erupted. She was constantly in the media sometimes being accused of being seductive or whatever. She eventually moved on and now suddenly she has to deal with this all over again even though she made it clear she wanted the charges dropped because she moved on. It's not fair to her! I don't care if he rots in jail but to make the victim deal with this all over again, and have to recall that night again (if it goes to trial) after so many years is cruel!

No, I wouldn't apply my opinion to that story and I don't think that the two are even remotely comparable.

Crimes were committed, victims are made to relive the crimes through bringing the person to justice.

Both were crimes against other individuals. It isn't like he got caught smoking a joint and is being asked to pay for the purported crime 30 years later.

How do you not see the distinction? No he didn't get caught smoking a joint but he also didn't get arrested for murdering 12,000 people. There is only one victim here and if this case brings her more pain than satisfaction in knowing that he's punished than who are you to try and make that decision? I'm not saying rape is less heinous than murder but she is still alive and has a voice and her feelings and preferences should be taken into consideration.

I'm glad he has been caught & I hope he will serve time, although his victim does not wish to see him but in jail - but she is probably pressured to say that.

I know a couple who back in the.....late 80's , (early 90's maybe?) we were talking about this and they said they will not watch one of his movies, at all!
Now I do not remember who made what so it is hard for me to do such things, however no one should get away with such a thing, even when they paid off the little girl. I do feel for the little girl who is now a mother herself. She did not want the attention then, or now. What horrible memories this must be bringing up for her!! Abuse all over again.

The prosecution of the rape of a child should not be decided if the pervert has enough money to flee the country or if enough time has passed that the child in question is now an adult. I was raped as a young boy by a trusted member of society.
When I spoke up and told my parents, they dismissed my claims due to the persons standing in the community. I have never mentioned it again and I am 51 today.
All this time, I can only hope he suffered some form of punishment yet, I'm certain he was allowed to rape other boys because nobody wanted to punish this kind generous man.

In today's messed up world the rape of a thirteen year old girl is not much of a crime if it is committed by someone rich and famous. Those protecting and defending this pervert should get their priorities straight and should get themselves checked to see if they have a soul.

Roman Polanski did rape against a child. Two of the most horrible things we can think of, short of torture and murder.

I didn't buy his Macbeth on DVD when it came out, way back, because I didn't like what he had done even before he'd been caught. I got a BBC version of Macbeth, instead (it's great - with Judy Dench!!!!).

My personal opinion is that he should do his time. He drugged and supplied alcohol to a child then raped her. The child in question is now 45 (I believe) and doesn't want to have to keep reliving this. I think that it is her call to make. I'd have no issues pressing charges against someone like that, but she doesn't want to have this continue to haunt her.

I think it is interesting that some people are saying that we have to look at the whole person when deciding whether or not to punish Roman Polanski. For example, Subroto thinks it is relevant that he is a movie-directing genius and not a serial rapist. But, those facts are simply not relevant in deciding whether or how much to punish Roman Polanski (or any other person, for that matter). Yes, priors are lokked at in sentencing, but can you imagine what this society would be like if we only punished "bad" people and we let those "good" people who just slipped this one time go scot-free?

I am glad that Oxnard has found some substance in my argument. I fully agree that no crime should go unpunished, irrespective of the status of the person committing the crime. By this principle, many important people, including past American Presidents, have been found guilty of violating the norms of jurisprudence. Have they been punished? The fact that their actions have been raised and debated in public, is equivalent to being punished. They need not be sent to prison just to serve as a deterrent to other people committing the same actions. We must remember that the "other people" are not Presidents who have contributed so much to the country. They cannot be bracketed with regular "criminals".

The fact that Polanski had to flee the country in shame and could not enter it for thirty years, is enough punishment for a genius like him. He has not repeated the crime again. So what is the point in punishing him now at the age of seventy, just to serve as a deterrent to other criminals!

Even if the child begged Polanski for sex, the law says it is statutory rape. Sex with a child is against the law. No exceptions.

I think none of us believes that a rapist should go unpunished. That's really not the subject at hand. Several people have used the phrase,"In this day and age". This crime was not committed "in this day and age", but several decades ago when the mores of the American public were different. I've also only noticed one mention here of the fact that the victim and her family were paid off at the time. That may be why the original charge was not rape. The victim was compensated (and no, I'm not saying that was right, simply that it occurred), Polanski was convicted of a crime, and the original judge on the case then decided to renig on the plea agreement. Is anyone right in this situation? No. Can it be made right by dragging the entire process through the courts again? No. Should it become a political millstone for anyone on either side? No. My question now is the same one I had when the case first occurred: Why did the DA fail to prosecute her mother?
