I was all excited that we were going to go to the Huntington Museum of Art for the Smithsonian Magazine Museum Day 2009.
Â
Well did I choose the wrong Museum to visit for this event. We entered the first part of the museum took a few shots and moved on to the next exhibit when i was taking a shot we were rudely informed that we were not allowed to take photos. What the heck you cant take photos at a museum, well then why would anyone want to go?
I check the museum web site for info on photography and there was no warning anywhere on the site that I could find. So getting there and then finding out totally blows! You can take photos in the conservatory but there is not much to see.

I was thinking since it has the C. Fred Edwards Conservatory the only Plant Conservatory in the state of West Virgina that it would be a good one wrong again, I don't see how they can call one dinky little room a Conservatory. On the web site it says "Our Orchid collection contains 400 varieties" so I'm thinking they are going to have a crap load of blooms to photograph, nope there were a few maybe 20 if that.
What a waste of time even though the admission was free it still took gas, and food along the way and I could have spent my day here in Ohio at a photographer friendly place. while I was typing this I seen the museum on the news and they got to show video of the place, so here are some of the photos I took before we were yelled at. There was a sign at the check in that we missed because we were excited to get started but the girl at the desk seen the cameras and could have said something.
The best part of the museum was the Chichuly glass there was only this one piece called the Huntington tower its pretty but not one of his better works. Want to see a good example of his work go to the Franklin Conservatory in Columbus Ohio it will not disappoint

And this one could use a good cleaning I tried to take a macro and picked up a lot of dirt in the shot on the glass and there were spider webs too.
If your going to take pictures don't waste you money or time on this place I give it a F

I love the glass piece though. It's very pretty.
And some galleries just don't allow any photos.
It's not uncommon.
The glass is very nice, especially the images you took. I'm not the biggest fan of his in the world, but your photos show it nicely. We had a huge installation of his work at our botanical garden a few years back, but it left me a little cold. Most interesting to me was the video of him working, at home and in Venice.
I have read that many art museums/galleries that forbid tripods will allow monopods. It is a question of crowd flow, and people could easily trip over tripods, but not so with monopods.
I always assume I can't take them and am glad when I can.
Love the Chihuly glass. :-)
Love that style of glasswork.
You can schedule and pay a fee to take your camera and go on a "photo tour". The cost is a whopping $350 for half a day or $600 for full day (their half a day is 2.5 hours, their full day is 5 hours).
Needless to say, I will not be going to this place....1) because I refuse to leave my camera at home and 2) I think with those prices, they don't need me to visit.
