Someone posted this as her own personal opinion. I not only disagree with these "quotes", I emphatically state that this is a collection of bald-faced lies created by someone with no honor, and posted by people with no intention of being honest or admitting they are guilty of libel and copyright infringement. It has appeared on Gather more than once, but this is the first time I've seen it. I contacted the publisher and the author for assistance, and requested permission to use actual quotes from the books to correct these right-wing falsehoods.
When I first saw these lies, I requested proof. I found out rather quickly that's a dirty word for Christian Conservatives. After my protests for lack of facts go unanswered, a particularly inconsequential individual requests that I stop bothering this poster with such unimportant things as demanding personal accountability, (because only the right can demand this at town hall meetings). She posts these 'facts' herself: (unchanged from the original comment)
"YO Wyoming Catt....here is the pagesyou were looking for.
Pg 261 From Audacity of Hope: 'I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction..' okay so he didnt' say Muslims,,,he said THEM....meaing Arabs and Pakistani "Americans" who were afraid of being interred like the Japanese in WWII
pg 220 From Dreams of My Father: 'I never emulate white men and brown men whose fates didn't speak to my own. It was into my father's image, the black man, son of Africa, that I'd packed all the attributes I sought in myself: the attributes of Martin and Malcolm, DuBois and Mandela.'
pg xu in the introducition of From Dreams of My Father: 'I ceased to advertise my mother's race at the age of 12 or 13, when I began to suspect that by doing so I was ingratiating myself to whites.
Pg 101 From Dreams of My Father: 'It remained necessary to prove which side you were on, to show your loyalty to the black masses, to strike out and name names..'
Pg 142 From Dreams of My Father: 'There was something about her that made me wary, a little too sure of herself, maybe and white.
Okay? so now shut up and apologize,,,,there are more, shall I post them for you"

As usual, these individuals aren't very coherent when lying, nor are they fully cognizant of accurate spelling and punctuation rules. But I got the gist of it, anyway.
So, since this person has invited rebuttal, I will post it here. I'm taking these in the order she put them, and have no problem posting actual pics of the pages, if need be:
Page 261-- (Paraphrased to excite "patriots") You can see on the above-referenced page that I've already shot that one down.
Page 220- Doctored quote. I find it odd that you did it, too, exactly the same way. Why did you do that? Do you actually have the book? Or are you being as dishonest as the original poster and pretending you do? Anyway, this was paraphrased and cut up to mean something "threatening". The actual quote- verbatim:
"Yes, I'd seen weakness in other men - Gramps and his disappointments, Lolo and his compromise. But these men had become object lessons for me, men I might love but never emulate, white men and brown men whose fates didn't speak to my own. It was into my father's image, the black man, son of Africa, that I'd packed all the attributes I sought in myself, the attributes of Martin and Malcolm, DuBois and Mandela. And if later I saw that the black men I knew - Frank or Ray or Will or Rafiq - fell short of such lofty standards; if I had learned to respect these men for the struggles they went through, recognizing them as my own - my father's voice had nevertheless remained untainted, inspiring, rebuking, granting or withholding approval. You do not work hard enough, Barry. You must help in your people's struggle. Wake up, black man!"
Page XV in the introduction-- In full context, the statement is part of his observations on race relations and others' first impressions of him when they learn of his mixed heritage. Here, verbatim, is the entirety:
"When people who don't know me well, black or white, discover my background (and it is usually a discovery, for I ceased to advertise my mother's race at the age of twelve or thirteen, when I began to suspect that by doing so I was ingratiating myself to whites), I see the split-second adjustments they have to make, the searching of my eyes for some telltale sign. They no longer know who I am. Privately, they guess at my troubled heart, I suppose - ..."
Page101-- Taken out of context to make him appear racially militant. However, However, when the full paragraphs are read, they reveal young Barack's confusion over his race and cultural heritage.
"We weren't indifferent or careless or insecure. We were alienated. But this strategy alone couldn't provide the distance I wanted, from Joyce or my past. After all, there were thousands of so-called campus radicals, most of them white and tenured and happily tolerated. No, it remained necessary to prove which side you were on, to show your loyalty to the black masses, to strike out and name names."
Page 142-- I had my suspicions before, but now I KNOW this person doesn't have that book in hand. She uses the same gender assertions the original poster did, and no such "she" exists in the true quote, which is below:
"Now he was trying to pull urban blacks and suburban whites together around a plan to save manufacturing jobs in metropolitan Chicago. He needed somebody to work with him, he said. Somebody black. ...
...After he was gone, I took the long way home, along the East River promenade, and tried to figure out what to make of the man. He was smart, I decided. He seemed committed to his work. Still, there was something about him that made me wary. A little too sure of himself, maybe. And white - he'd said himself that that was a problem."
*****
Now, of course, there is more, ONE MORE, and I'm fully aware of why she didn't comment on it. IT EXISTS NOWHERE IN HIS BOOKS. From the original post:
From Dreams of My Father : 'I found a solace in nursing a pervasive sense of grievance and animosity against my mother's race.'
This passage was actually taken from an unfavorable review of his book in the American Conservative March 2007 issue by author Steve Sailer. The words are his, not Obama's.
To quote Mr. Sailer:
"He inherited his father’s penetrating intelligence; was raised mostly by his loving liberal white grandparents in multiracial, laid-back Hawaii, where America’s normal race rules never applied; and received a superb private school education. And yet, at least through age 33 when he wrote Dreams from My Father, he found solace in nursing a pervasive sense of grievance and animosity against his mother’s race."
SO-- Me, shut up and apologize? Don't think so. I do think apologies are owed to myself and the author of "Dreams Of My Father" for continuing to perpetrate lies and committing libel in the interests of furthering racial animosity and party 'integrity'. But, knowing such as these have no honor, I will not waste a brain cell in hopes of receiving said apology.
The political climate has enough anger and resentment on both sides without unprincipled clodpates adding unfounded and unresearched fuel to the fire.
Anyone who does this, deserves to be publicly taken to task by Gather officials for disregarding the Terms Of Service everyone else has to abide by. And for just being lousy examples of human beings.

Here's to HONOR. May yours always shine in every post and comment.
And, I think I was extremely facetious in that invitation to you. Somehow, I knew your big heart wouldn't do it. Simply calculated bravado on my part.
You are a treasure to converse with.
NEVER small, Catt... when it's the absolute truth. And never alone. I did not mean for that thread to so badly deteriorate, but I by damn will stand with you on this now that it's blown up.
But again, thanks.
I am, however, happy that at least ONE did.
She said Deloris had the right to yadayada Freedom of Speech. So I slightly changed her words as an example.
She removed her support. That tells me I made a dent in someone's attitude on that side.
I admit the relentlessness was childish, but someone had to stop that junk from being taken as gospel.
"Really, Elaine? So it would be okay if I paraphrased what you just wrote and said,
'Elaine wrote "I didn't see your post yesterday, but whatever you said about the n*ggers, you had the right to do so.
As of now we still have Freedom of speech and white is right.
I hope you're feeling better now." '
that would be okay with you? Please state for the record that you don't mind such libel. Because that's EXACTLY WHAT DELORIS DID TO SOMEONE ELSE."
Huggles (even in all my dark dank self today I am still being nice...gag)
By the way, what should I call you? 'Dead' doesn't sound quite right. How 'bout DaLi (dolly)?
Thank you for commenting, Nellie!
Thank you for taking the time to rebuke and discredit the rotten lies of the conservatives.
Excellent!
But thank you for the support. I don't feel quite the idiot I felt yesterday....
Hate someone all you like, for any reason you like; but don't propagate falsehoods about them just to get more people to support and mirror your hatred. (My, I do go on...)
Anyways, thank you much, Peter. You're another person whose thoughts and attitude I deeply respect on Gather.
As a student of people, I am fascinated but saddened that there are some whose chosen path is one of hatred, blame, and misrepresentation. We do not ascend the mountain if we do it on the backs of others -- we only tramp them down.
Kudos for your response on this, Catt.
Great thoughts on integrity, Peter.
Acknowledge to other Christians who do not share the hate that you are also out there.
I hATE those that distort and outright lie about stuff. I may expect it within "fishing stories;" but reality demands the truth.
And it is the truth that you have shown me, instead of the perverted lies of the original author
It was not "my fight" when I walked with Dr King in 08/05/1965 outside of Chicago.
I am white, and I had no "horse in the race;" so to speak. But, I went up there from ST Louis with 3 other friends, all white. Because we wanted to stand up for what was right.
But people need to stand up for what is right. ANd you do.
Were either of them alive today, I know they'd thank you. Please let me be their proxy:
THANK YOU.
I did shake Dr Ralf Abernathy's habd before we started. He was dignified.
My neighbour from across the street was going and had one space left, and I was happy to go, once I got permission from my grandmother, whose 90th birthday party was "postphoned."
August 5th, outside of Chicago.
Those who have no credibility or integrity jumped on the wagon to defend her. And, without or deliberately with full knowledge that she was wrong.
Just because she is an old biddy doesn't make it okay for her to spew such lies and then claim that she has grandchildren who are half black as her excuse to be prejudice but justified because 'she loves them so much'.
I ignore the others. I find it is the norm for that group to support untruths and rabble-rousing rhetoric. Its the glue that holds them together.
You are an insightful woman, Bunny. We're lucky to have you on the honest side.
Thanks, Em Jay.
As you are the FOURTH person (just ask, I'll show you where) on her side to advocate lying to support right-wingers' stance, you weaken your worth as bloggers, debaters, and humans.
FOUR of you in three short days.
That is truly pitiful.
1. Is it the Truth?
2. Is it fair to all concerned?
3. Will it build goodwill and better friendships?
4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
If it won't meet all four conditions then don't do it or say it.
If all human beings applied this test to everything they do, say or post on Gather, the world would be a way bette rplace.
Where did I defend telling lies? You're seeing what you want to see. I also didn't defend her.
You're both right. My reply to Lera was a knee-jerk reaction. I took her comment and read things in it that weren't there. In this, I'm an ass. I did not stop to consider what my reply should have been, or what I was replying to.
Embarrassing as it is, I leave up my mistake.. and my subsequent apology.
I apologize to you, Lera, for taking your words out of context. (Can't figure out where I learned such a thing...)
I can see I've been way too occupied with that damned post to be objective towards even perceived opposition.
Time to get off the PC and go bake cookies...
Agreeded
Catt
I am glad you wrote this !!

I maintain that, since they are paying her to post this, even after having been notified it violates copyright protection and fair use laws, they are every bit as guilty.
It happened to the swastika. Its happening right now to the Gadsden flag.
We're all nuts....
Don't know if she did it herself, or my emails to the copyright owners had an effect. But I can get off my soapbox now.
TO ALL OF YOU WHO SUPPORTED MY EFFORTS TO THIS END: THANK YOU.
I promise to not go off the deep end like that again..... this week....
I see the polls have slightly recovered from the Summer tealeafer's attacks. I swear if I don't start to see SOME tangible sense of cohesion within the dem/Lib/Pro members in DC THEY will see some major DEEP end coming from this way! OMG DEM WTF?
you did good in making that clear with your examples.......
thanks WC.......
I absolutely LOVED your "Being "Really" Proud of America" article. You're a talented writer, dude.
I was "engaged in abusive commenting, harassing and personally attacking several members, which is against site policies" and they want me to remove the comments where I called The Liar and her supporters names such as bigot, libeler, etc. (Okay, there was something about crack cocaine abuse in there, too...) I have no idea if they sent similar letters to the others on the posts who did the same.
I was a bit miffed at first, but Nellie set me straight (Thank you!) : If I'm gonna stay here and beat people over the head for their ignorance, I gotta do it with a smile.
Okay... I'm off to delete the comments. I have the option of restating the comments in a 'friendlier' manner, but why bother?
A little humiliating, but a learning experience.
I remember the part when he read about this black man who had bleached his skin to get lighter and at the time he was confronted with the why a person should feel ashamed to be black. He made me cry to think about what people had to put up in this country full of small minded bigots and racist.
It is sad the parents burden their children with hatred and racism, young minds being distorted and damaged by hate and discrimination.
How long will it take for this country and its people to own up to the disgrace they continue to bestow on the rest of us with their shameful behavior against this president.
How long will it take before the light of reason will pierce the darkness of their soul?
When will they forgive themselves for their evil deeds against humanity, because when you shame one you have shamed all of us.
When will the true spirit of freedom will embrace the universal morality based on justice for all the children of the world?
When will America rise above the witch hunt mentality and become a true beacon of light for all who seek freedom. Will it learn before too late or is it destined to fall because its people have no courage to stand up for righteousness and justice?
But we'll get there. With people like the you and the rest of those who supported the post's removal, how can we lose?
I know it feels like we're making it by inches, but look back... the miles we've crossed so far together are nothing to sneeze at.
No one can considers him or herself free until we are all free. When we can look in eachothers eyes and see no color rather recognize ourself, our shared humanity, dreams and hopes for all mankind.
Thank you, J.
"Will you shut UP, already!! You're like a dog with a bone, y'know that?!"
Saintly old bat...
Thank you, Jessica!
The German side is just loud and funny.
I admire you for standing up for what is correct and being willing to make things better for us all. Discussions don't have to sink to that level, and you and I (especially me) did it on another post by Leo.
If I'd emailed him first, as it was satire, not what he believed, I would have saved myself a lot of embarrassment as I'd have shut my fingers up. I've since emailed him and left the comment there, as well as posted a public apology to him, in another comment.
As it's something I don't usually do, react like that, there were other factors involved at the time, which I ought to have reminded myself of, even if I had to whack myself over the head.
You came back to that very same post and were very gracious and real in your following comments.
Marilyn
I appreciate your courage and relentlessness in pursuing the truth, in contacting the appropriate parties, and in remaining civil on this post. We should all shatter deceit wherever we find it or the deceivers will take our silence as consent.
But....
I take issue with some of the broad implications in your article. These implications are not following your fine example of truth.
proof. I found out rather quickly that's a dirty word for Christian Conservatives.
Why do you apply this to all Christian Conservatives when you are dealing with one person?
Cena: Thank you for taking the time to rebuke and discredit the rotten lies of the conservatives.
Again, why is Cena applying rotten lies to conservatives. Aren't there liberals who lie?
Yeah... one out of thousands. But ONE, just the same...
I may be reading into this one but it seems you are implying that there are thousands of conservatives, or Christian conservatives, who need to be attacked. Do you know thousands of conservatives, or Christian conservatives, who have done what the one you are referring to has done?
I find it is the norm for that group to support untruths and rabble-rousing rhetoric. Its the glue that holds them together.
Isn't this another broad brush in which you are painting people with?
You are an insightful woman, Bunny. We're lucky to have you on the honest side.
Here you are clearly saying liberals are the honest side, so that would make conservatives the dishonest side?
Of the 131,257,328 who voted in the 2008 presidential election, 45.66%, or 59,934,814 people, voted for John McCain. I'm not even including the Independent, Libertarian, Constitution and Green parties, but that's almost 60 million who voted Conservative against 69.5 million who voted Liberal. Are you intending to say 60 million people are on the rabble-rousing dishonest side and all Conservatives are rabble-rousing dishonest people? Or only all Christian Conservatives are rabble-rousing dishonest people? And that makes 69.5 million Liberal voters, all who are honest? Or are we only talking about politicians here? All Liberal politicians are honest and all Conservative politicians are rabble-rousing dishonest?
Please don't get me wrong. I do admire your fortitude. But for the sake of the commitment to accuracy and honesty, you may need to examine some of your statements.
But, to answer your query-- When we spoke of dishonesty and "the honest side", it was for this issue alone. I can honestly state that I've found liberals to be the more honest of the two groups, but of course there are problems with forthrightness on all sides.
As for my personal view of Christian Conservatives, the majority of the ones I've met in person and on Gather have one thing in common-- they're afraid. For some reason, they expect all the nastiness they've been dishing out to finally come and poop on their collective heads. Its not, but you can't tell them that. They insist everyone adhere to European language, names and attitudes, and label it 'American', not facing that fact that we are a nation built of other nations' children. There is, of course, more to my views than that, but it will suffice for now.
I'm sorry if, seeing you are not of the same mental attitude as the majority, I have unfairly attacked your sensibilities. I will attempt to see you as your own person and not as one of the hive.
They are pitiful cretins who have used up all the sympathy anyone will ever give them. They don't read, they rely on the hate mongers on FOX to do that and will fall by the wayside.
I hope the publishers file for libel.
But pitiful cretins they are who forward this as truth to others.
oh yeah and if you see that fairy god mother tell her she owes me a new pair of shoes lol
...That particular fairy godmother paused for two precious seconds out of her busy schedule to tell me to tell you, "Christmas is coming.. its in the works."
Not really an answer, but I suspect its the best you're going to get.
But thanks for the heads-up on the backup. Nothing like a little reaffirmation of conviction...
"They are less interested in telling the truth than in catching the attention of their public, whose authorities cannot be checked and whose subject-matter, owing to the passage of time, is mostly lost in the unreliable streams of mythology."
Huhn.. I see. He was persnickety about facts, too.
But Hecataeus' "Geneologies" is a good example, too. He refused to believe the fantastic stories told by word of mouth and did his own research, resulting in more accurate accounts of events and heroes.
