President Obama’s speech to the General Assembly of the United Nations was moving and very hopeful. It was very clear, although Obama never mentioned his name, that he wanted to delineate his administration’s foreign policy from that of President Bush. The President said the days of go-it-alone foreign policy was over. The U.S. was entering a “new era of engagement” was the message Obama wanted to communicate to the rest of the world.
In other words President Obama was assuring the international community of nations that adults were once again in charge of the United States. No longer would they have to put up with our country behaving like a school yard bully. And that is exactly how Team Bush behaved. It’s hard to imagine how thinking people could have been so eager for war and so quick to close their eyes to serious issues like the environment. And I’m not talking about the members of Team Bush. I have no question as to why they were war mongering, “drill baby drill” meat bags. It was the moderate Republicans and even Democrats that went along with Team Bush’s idiocy that freaked me out. I suppose it can be attributed to mob think.
But Barack Obama wasn’t fooled. He opposed using military force against terrorists from the beginning. President Obama understands that fighting terrorism means we are not fighting a nation. What we are fighting are ideas. Very evil and dark ideas. But you cannot defeat ideas with military force. Good grief, didn’t we learn that lesson in Vietnam? The way you fight bad ideas is with good ideas and enlightenment. These people who say we should not talk to our enemies or feel no responsibility to open their minds to the cultures and traditions of their fellow human beings just don’t get it. The beginning of living peacefully together is understanding one another.
Listening to Obama speak about humanity reveals a seriously deep thinking man of true wisdom. He asked if our generation would be remembered as the one that dragged the old hatreds and prejudices of the 20th century into the 21st? And he called for an end to these obstacles to progress. Which caused me to wonder why humanity would be so dumb. It’s true, every generation passes on anger, hatred and prejudice to the next. Often without even understanding why. To call for end to such stupidity is indeed wise. This is evidenced by the fact that such a call is not new to this generation. But in the past it always fell on deaf ears. But is there a glimmer of hope that this time it may take hold?
I think the fact that we elected Barack Obama President may be the first glimmer it may be true. And I’m not talking about his skin color. I’m talking about his vision of international relations. Judging by how the world admires our President’s approach, could it be that the world is beginning to wake up ushering in a new era? An era where military force truly becomes the last option? An era that sees an end to survival of the fittest economics? Perhaps even an era where the entire world begins cooperating to protect our fragile planet for future generations? Of course only time will tell. But I’m feeling more and more hopeful these days. It’s true that the voices of the past are still loud and obtuse. But their message is old and has not passed the test of time. You might be able to end something with violence, but you never solve anything. And that economical survivalism is self defeating and unjust. These ideas have failed humanity and I do not believe a majority will ever embrace them again.

"Keep your friends close, but keep your enemies closer." You can't do either by threats or bullying.
There's been so much pessimism in recent months about a cooperative agreement among member nations in the coming Copenhagen conference in December.
If you noticed, next to UN General secretary, Ban Ki-moon, in opening that meeting had Danish Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen next to him. (He's the 3rd different Prime Minister "Rasmussen" in Denmark in a row, after Fogh Rasmussen and his predecessor, Poul Nyrup Rasmussen).
Anyways, for the past 9 years, Danish politics has been weighed down by the weird politics of the Danish People's Party which doesn't believe Climate Change is a problem. But finally, in the past couple months, Løkke Rasmussen is doing everything possible to ensure that a real treaty get implemented.
Nonetheless, with the special interests behind the G-8 desperate to hang on to their non-democratic hold on the world's economic policies, it will be an uphill battle in December.
Obama is doing an incredible job with all the balls he has in the air right now, both domestic and international
Excellent article!
President Obama is a long-term thinker - and this country sure needed one!
Sigh. :-(
Your second alternative is much more likely, I am sad to say. That's how it has always been. People (in general) don't recognize or understand why.
This is the first time I have had to be honest with myself and acknowledge that the President's Address to the United Nations was, well, excellent.
He spoke through the hearts and minds of many. Living in Palestine (West Bank) I am aware of the progress being made and the efforts of this administration. I pray we never see an incident again like what happened in Gaza 2008. It is nearly impossible to heal the scars left on the Palestinian/Israeli people. Diplomacy is the only answer. Period. And it goes both ways.
I left with a feeling of hope and yes, words can inspire, but I am left with the reality that actions speak louder and it's a game of "wait and see".
If the time is allowed for us to get back on track and build our economy from the foundation and not the top everything else will follow.
When success is returned to the Nation they--even then will not acknowledge the facts. Sad 30%, very sad!
We are dealing with a country that celebrate the person who killed many innocent people in a plane over Scotland.
Let's all sing Kumbaya, give appeasement a chance!
Devin,
Did the holocaust happen? Should Libya celebrated the return of the Lockerbe bomber?
Think this people can honestly negotiate?
He is embraced as a brother, son and temperate leader not as a dictatorial omnipotent self-righteous head of the free world. That alone is a plus even though the middle Easterners who embrace him are shady--he does have their attention and take him seriously without being threatened by him. That alone is huge!
He is the POTUS that the World can relate to and is willing to negotiate with, that is a gift we can enjoy after so much iron fisted demanding and posturing.
OH, I am sure POTUS 44 can get tough when need be yet, the need is not yet apparent. I think he will surprise everyone if those Right wing detractors will just let him do his job.
We are dealing with the five permanent members of the UN Security Council who just happen to be the five largest arms merchants in the world...United States, United Kingdom, France, Russia, and China. All of whom export a tremendous amount of death each year.
Yes. According to recent news reports, it wasn't a celebration but a traditional tribal greeting; but no, they shouldn't have celebrated his return. (btw he is the only convicted Lockerbie bomber -- convicted on circumstantial evidence I might add.)
Ah, Obama is the new Neville Chamberlain.
Who's responsibility is it when they launch a missle at the US? Sponsor people that bomb our embassy? Bomb our country?
Naivite.
"Obama is going to roll over and play dead." Like hell! "Shoot first and ask questions later" should never be the paradigm of American diplomacy. "Talk softly but carry a big stick" is more like it, but you conservatives think "talk softly" means "you're a spineless wimp".
You misunderestimate BHO the same way the Japanese misunderestimated FDR.
Turn in your arms, give up your freedoms!
Even the long winded nutjob from Libya loved Obama!
Solidarity man!
Oooooooo...... He's respected by the world's craziest dictators!
The UN is just a big organization of anti-Semites and socialists.
It's not that we shouldn't talk to enemies but talking is cheap when they keep doing things they not supposed to. Talk didn't end WWII it was actions...
